Christopher Hess excelled during his time at Waubonsee as a student and an athlete. He learned many valuable lessons through his athletic competition that have served him well in more recent challenges he has encountered. Hess has served two tours of duty in the Middle East, as a Marine during “Desert Storm” in Kuwait in 1990 and with the Army in Iraq through “Operation Iraqi Freedom.” in 2004. Hess currently serves in the Army Reserves and is stationed in Joliet, Illinois.
Hess was a key part of Aurora Central Catholic High School’s baseball program prior to coming to Waubonsee. He was an All-Suburban Catholic Conference performer in high school, playing on the Chargers’ 1983 Class “A” State Champion team and the 1984 runner up squad.
Hess played outfield for the Chiefs in 1986 and 1987, becoming the first baseball player at Waubonsee to ever be named an NJCAA All-American his sophomore season. He was selected to the All-Region IV First Team and was the starting right fielder in the Illinois Junior College All-Star Game in 1987. Hess was also tabbed All-Skyway Conference First Team both years at Waubonsee, batting .454 as a freshman and .431 as a sophomore in league play. He continued his playing career at NCAA Division I Western Illinois University on a baseball scholarship.
During his time playing for the Leathernecks, Hess was bitten by the fast pitch softball bug. He competed for regional power Dolan and Murphy in the late 80’s and early 90’s. Hess then moved to St. Louis and competed for GMC in 1995 and 1996. That is where he met his wife Angie, a Streator native. The couple currently resides in Streator with their two daughters, Elizabeth and Emily.
