Hess has served two tours of duty in the Middle East, as a Marine during “Desert Storm” in Kuwait in 1990 and with the Army in Iraq through “Operation Iraqi Freedom.” in 2004. Hess played outfield for the Chiefs in 1986 and 1987, becoming the first baseball player at Waubonsee to ever be named an NJCAA All-American his sophomore season. He was selected to the All-Region IV First Team and was the starting right fielder in the Illinois Junior College All-Star Game in 1987. He continued his playing career at NCAA Division I Western Illinois University on a baseball scholarship.

During his time playing for the Leathernecks, Hess was bitten by the fast pitch softball bug. He competed for regional power Dolan and Murphy in the late 80’s and early 90’s. Hess then moved to St. Louis and competed for GMC in 1995 and 1996. That is where he met his wife Angie, a Streator native.
