Aurora West High School graduate Gary Oros was a record-setting pitcher for the Chiefs in 1973 and 1974. Recruited to play at Waubonsee by Coach William Prince, Oros went on to be a two-time All-Skyway Conference and NJCAA All-State selection.
The hard-throwing Oros possessed a somewhat unorthodox, yet devastating curveball, which baffled hitters. As a result, he led the nation in strikeouts his freshman year when he fanned 173 batters. More than 30 years later, he still holds nine pitching records at Waubonsee including strikeouts in a game (19), consecutive wins (10), consecutive shutout innings (32), career wins (22) and lowest career earned run average (1.65). His Waubonsee single-season strikeout mark and career strikeout total of 328 will likely never be eclipsed.
Oros accepted a baseball scholarship at Northern Illinois University (NIU) where an injury limited his further athletic success. He earned a B.S. in Education from NIU in 1976 and later relocated to Colorado. He moved to California in 1985 and received extensive law enforcement training through the American River College and the Los Rios Community College district.
Oros has worked in law enforcement in Sacramento County for the last 19 years. He spent nine of those years serving on a federally funded Gangs and Narcotics Special Task Force. He is currently the Supervising Probation Officer for Sacramento County and resides in Fair Oaks, Calif., with his wife, Trisha.
