When the game of soccer was still in its infancy in America, Kevin B. Schmidt was a giant of the community college game. Lightning quick on the soccer pitch, Schmidt helped lay the foundation of the Chiefs’ program by setting a standard that is still unequaled in Waubonsee history. He remains the college’s all-time leading career scorer with a total of 38 assists and 81 goals, a number that has not been approached since.

Schmidt graduated from Hinckley-Big Rock High School in 1981, where he was an All-State and All-Midwest selection his senior year. A three-time All-Little 10 Conference selection, Schmidt tallied 121 goals and 72 assists in his prep career. He continued that level of success at Waubonsee earning All-Region Player of the Year and NJCAA All-American status his sophomore year. From his midfielder/forward position, he twice scored six goals in one game, an unusual double ‘hat-trick.’ Schmidt led Waubonsee’s nationally-ranked 1982 team to a 22-4-1 record and a 9-0 victory over Triton College in the Region IV Championship.

“I had a lot of good teammates who knew how to get me the ball in a position where I could score,” acknowledged Schmidt.

Schmidt transferred to Western Illinois University on a full soccer scholarship where he majored in Liberal Arts. He led the Leathernecks in scoring and was named Player of the Week several times during his two years there. Today, Schmidt is still laying foundations of the future as owner of Schmitty’s Concrete in Hinckley, where he lives with his daughter Jacqueline.
