Some things are thought of as a given. Considering the fact that Susan (Mattingly) Johnson’s father Bob was a well-known area high school basketball coach, it was no surprise that she would be an outstanding basketball player. However, excelling on the tennis court and softball diamond to the degree that she did was a bit unexpected.

A natural athlete, Johnson changed uniforms and equipment with the seasons. In the fall she picked up a racket and led Waubonsee’s tennis team, playing number one singles and doubles, earning All-Skyway Conference honors both years. Johnson capped off her sophomore season as the 1988 Skyway Conference Player of the Year after winning the number one singles title.

In the winter Johnson put on gym shoes and earned All-Skyway Conference on the basketball court both years, representing Waubonsee in the Region IV All-Star game her sophomore season.

In the spring Johnson grabbed a bat and glove, reaching All-Skyway status on the softball diamond in 1989 as a second baseman. The well-rounded three-sport athlete completed an unprecedented home run of sorts, when she earned Skyway All-Academic honors that year as well with a 3.19 grade-point-average. Hence, it was not a revelation when the Oswego High School graduate was named Waubonsee’s 1988-89 Female Athlete of the Year.

Johnson transferred to Northern Illinois University and then moved on to Elmhurst College where she played basketball for the Lady Bluejays. Johnson earned a Bachelor’s degree in Sports Medicine from Elmhurst in 1993 and a Master’s degree in Physical Therapy from Midwestern University in Downers Grove. She currently works as a Physical Therapist for West Physical Therapy in Sugar Grove, and lives in Oswego with her husband Rodney and their three boys, A.J., Ryan and Zach.
