A willing, can-do spirit could best describe Tracey (Latham) Stoneberg’s involvement in athletics at Waubonsee. She then elevated her game from there and continues to do so well after her playing days for the Chiefs. A standout softball player at Waubonsee during the 1989-90 and 1990-91 seasons, Stoneberg continues to play in tournaments nationwide with her team, Aero Mixed Softball, winners of the Illinois state title and top-three finishers at the 2005 and 2006 World Championships.
Stoneberg graduated from Sandwich High School in 1988 where she played on the Indians varsity all four years. She was named All-Interstate Eight Conference and tabbed Sandwich’s Most Valuable Player her senior year. Although she wasn’t recruited to play at Waubonsee, she walked-on with the team and quickly earned the starting catcher position. She went on to earn All-Skyway Conference honors both years helping lead the program to its’ first winning season in seven years. “It was such a friendly atmosphere at Waubonsee,” she said. “It was like a big family while I was there.”
Lending her outstanding athleticism to the short-handed women’s basketball squad, Stoneberg eventually earned All-Skyway Conference Honorable Mention status. Although she had never played outside of gym class, Stoneberg then pitched in and joined the women’s tennis team, helping the team to a second-place finish in the Skyway in 1991. The three-sport athlete was named the school’s 1991 Female Athlete of the Year.
Stoneberg was also recently honored by Waubonsee as one of the college’s “Fabulous 40” alumni. She has worked for the Sandwich School District and the Sheridan Correctional Center. She has also coached basketball, softball and archery for the YMCA. Stoneberg and her husband Pete live in Yorkville with their four children, Brandyn, 11; Kylie, 9; Ethan, 8; and Evan, 6.
