(Sugar Grove, IL) – After three straight rainouts over the previous three days, Waubonsee Community College's baseball team was more than ready to take the field again. The Chiefs hosted Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC) front-runner McHenry County College (20-4, 5-1) in an afternoon doubleheader on Monday. However, the visiting Scots spoiled the Chiefs' day by taking both games to drop Waubonsee under .500 overall on the season at 7-8-1 and 0-6 in ISCC play. McHenry pulled away late to win the opener 12-3 and took game two 8-1 to complete the sweep.

In game one both starting pitchers looked dominating in the first inning, with Waubonsee's Brendan Lawry striking out three of the four batters he faced. McHenry threatened in the second inning by placing runners at second and third via an error and a double. But Lawry struck out the Scots' Colin Kalinowski to end the inning.

However, the Scots got on the board in the top of the third with a bunt base hit, a bloop single and a sacrifice fly by Jack Hines to grab a 1-0 lead.  The Chiefs threatened in their half of the third when Ryan Beer reached base on an error with two outs. Carter Wardell dumped a bloop single to center and advanced to second on the throw back to the infield, putting runners at second third. However, the Scots' Nevin Wall enticed Logan Barnick to pop out to second to end the inning. The Chiefs' defense then collapsed in the top of the fourth as McHenry scored three unearned runs via three hits, a hit batsman and three Waubonsee errors. Meanwhile Wall kept the Chiefs bats under wraps through four innings, striking out five and allowing just one bloop single.

Down 4-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth, the Chiefs mounedt a comeback. Singles by Dante Maietta and Garrett Bragg, and a walk to Beer loaded the bases with one out. Wardell then singled to left field to knock in two runs and chase Wall from the game. Barnick then drove in a third Chiefs' run with a ground out to second base off reliever Colton Bauman. With the potential tying run at third base Brendan O'Connor then lined out to a leaping Miller Wallace at third base to end the inning.

Unfortunately, McHenry quickly got those runs back in the top of the sixth off Chiefs' reliever Ben Croci. A double, two walks, an error, a single and passed ball put the Scots back in front by four runs at 7-3. McHenry then broke the game open by scoring five more times in the top of the seventh off the Chiefs' Michael Lorenz. Highlighted by a two-run home run just inside the left field foul pole by Nick Finley and a two-run double to dead center field by Hines, the Scots surged ahead 12-3. Lawry took the loss despite striking out seven over five innings of work. Wardell finished the game 2 for 4 with two runs driven in, while Maietta went 1 for 3 with a run scored.

McHenry started game two the same way they did in the opener, scoring their first run on a sacrifice fly by Hines to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. With two outs and no one on base in the top of the second inning, McHenry utilized two Chiefs' errors, two hit batters, a wild pitch and a single to score three more times off starter Frank Quinn. The Scots then pulled away by pushing across four more runs in the top of the fourth to grab a commanding 8-0 lead, taking advantage of two more hit batsmen and a walk along the way.

Meanwhile, McHenry's Luke Uhwat cruised through the first five innings, keeping the Chiefs off the scoreboard and allowing just three hits. Waubonsee finally broke through in the bottom of the sixth off Scots' reliever Josh Ralston to avoid the shutout. Sam Tickel smacked a two-out single to center to drive in Barnick who had led off the inning with a single to right field. Quinn took the loss surrendering five earned runs. Barnick finished 2 for 3 with a run scored and a stolen base, while Tickel went 1 for 2 with a run batted in and was hit by a pitch. The Chiefs are in action again tomorrow, Tuesday, April 13 when they host Prairie State College in an ISCC doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m.
