Chiefs Trounce Rockford JV's

(Sugar Grove, IL) – Waubonsee Community College's men's basketball team trounced Rockford University's Junior Varsity 117-86 on Friday evening in the second game of the Inaugural Chiefs' Classic. In the opening game at Erickson Hall Gymnasium Carl Sandburg College rallied to knock off Joliet Junior College 91-84 in overtime. The Chiefs (8-1), ranked 14th in the latest NJCAA Division II poll, are set to play the Chargers (8-5) beginning at 2:00 p.m. tomorrow, Saturday, December 9. Joliet (3-9) will take on Aurora University's Junior Varsity at noon.

Waubonsee ran out to a 10-2 lead two minutes into the game against the overmatched Regents. A block by the Chiefs' 6'8" Dylan Fuzak led directly to a David Robinson three-pointer and then Fuzak nailed his own shot from beyond the arc on the next trip down the court to make it 22-10. A trey by Fernando Perez extended the lead to 33-16 midway through the first half. A steal and two-handed tomahawk slam by Robinson upped the lead to 41-20 with seven minutes left in the half. The Chiefs reached the 50-point mark with 3:45 still to go until the intermission. Moments later a pair of free throws by Aurora Central High School graduate Donovan Grunloh cut Waubonsee's lead to 50-30. Another three-pointer, this one by Donovan Brown, helped the Chiefs head to the locker room with a comfortable 61-30 advantage. As a matter of fact, Waubonsee had more fast break points (31) than the Regents had total points at the break.

The Chiefs then started the second half the same way with a 10-2 run to take a 71-32 lead. Head coach Lance Robinson liberally used his bench as Waubonsee maintained a 35-to-40-point advantage. A breakaway, left-handed slam by Donovan Taylor made the score 91-55 with nine and half minutes left in the game. The Chiefs reached triple digits with 6:45 to go on an inside basket by Edvin Bosnjak. Two minutes later Aboubacar Sidibe made a steal at the top of the key and raced ahead of two Rockford defenders. The 6'1" freshman guard threw down a one-handed cup dunk to the delight of his teammates and the home crowd. Meanwhile, the Regents continued to fire away from three-point range nailing several long shots to cut the deficit down to 30 points at 112-82 with two minutes remaining. Antwon Agee then capped off the offensive onslaught with a triple from the right wing with 0:40 left.

Brown led Waubonsee with 20 points to go along with four assists. Robinson finished with 13 points, while Perez also tallied 13 points and dished out four assists. Fuzak added a dozen points as six different Chiefs reached double figures. Taylor and Doss each booked 10 points and grabbed six and seven rebounds, respectively. Zachariah Hayslett chipped in with nine points and Reece Boyd contributed eight points.
