Doss, Brown headline Chiefs' Post-Season honors

Six members of Waubonsee Community College's men's basketball program were recognized with post-season accolades. Chiefs' guards Duane Doss and Donovan Brown were both named Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC) First Team and All-Region 4 First Team. Teammate Fernando Perez was chosen All-ISCC Second Team, with Dylan Fuzak, Zachariah Hayslett and David Robinson each selected All-ISCC Honorable Mention. Doss, Perez and Robinson were also selected to the Region 4 All-Tournament team after helping lead the Chiefs to a runner-up finish and a stellar 28-5 record overall.    

Waubonsee's point guard, Doss did a little of everything for his team throughout the season. The sophomore from south suburban Beecher averaged 14.4 points and 5.6 assists per game, to go along with a team-leading 72 steals. The quick and always active 5'10" Doss also led the Chiefs in rebounding at 6.6 boards a game and shot 50.3 percent from the floor on the season. He booked 37 three-point baskets, including making a school single-game record nine long range baskets in a lopsided 125-81 win at Elgin Community College late in the season.   

Brown led Waubonsee in scoring by averaging 17.0 points per contest, including an 18.9 average over 14 ISCC games. The 6'2" sophomore guard registered a team-leading 205 field goals, including 58 three-pointers. The Bolingbrook High School product also tallied 94 assists and made 40 steals. A 6'3" forward, Perez averaged 14.6 points-per-game and made a team-leading 135 free throws, shooting 81.8 percent from the line for the season. A tough, physical defender, the sophomore from Elgin's Larkin High School also handed out 91 assists and hauled down 6.5 rebounds-per-game.

Fuzak, a 6'9" sophomore from Geneva High School, often had to guard the opposing team's biggest post-position player. However, on the offensive side the Chiefs' tallest player nailed a team-leading 78 three-point baskets on the way to averaging 8.3 points a game. The 6'2" Hayslett came off the Chiefs' bench to provide a spark to the offense. The explosive freshman from Memphis, Tennessee slashed his way to the basket and an 8.5 points-per-game average while also dishing out two assists per contest.

A sophomore from Chicago's Lake View High School, Robinson averaged 12.5 points and 4.8 rebounds a game to go along with recording 42 steals. The 6'5" forward posted a team-leading field goal percentage of 53.4 percent, making 158 of 296 shots from the floor overall. Robinson connected on 38 of 100 three-point shot attempts, while converting 120 of 196 two-point attempts for a stellar 61.2 percent inside the arc.

Waubonsee was ranked as high as 11th in the NJCAA's Division II poll during the season and finished the regular season with a 26-4 record, the most regular season wins in program history. Coach Lance Robinson's Chiefs went 12-2 in conference play to finish tied with McHenry County College for the ISCC title. Waubonsee was seeded fifth in the Region 4 Tournament and reached the title game for the third straight year. The Chiefs fell to third-ranked and top-seeded South Suburban College in the final to finish the season with a sparkling 28-5 record, the second most wins in a season in program history.

Among all NJCAA Division II teams the Chiefs finished in the top-20 in seven statistical categories. The Chiefs were 4th in defensive rebounds per game with an average of 32.3 per game, 7th in free throw percentage at 74.3 percent, 11th in three-point baskets with 302, 12th in field goals with 1,100 made baskets and points per game with a 91.8 average, 16th in assists with an average of 18.8 per game, and 19th in field goal percentage allowed at 41.4 per game.
