Chiefs bounce ONU JV's to reach .500 mark

(Sugar Grove, IL) – Waubonsee Community College's men's soccer team moved to the .500 mark on the season with a 3-0 victory over Olivet Nazarene University's Junior Varsity on Friday afternoon. The Chiefs (3-3) controlled much of the action en route to handing the Tigers (2-1) their first loss. For the match Waubonsee outshot the Tigers 17-8 overall and held a 7-5 edge in shots on goal. The Chiefs' trio of goalkeepers Dana Brisbon Jr., Orlando Velazquez and David Ramirez all spent time manning the net to combine for the shutout.

The match was a defensive stalemate in the early going. Waubonsee did not get its first shot on goal until the 16th minute when Aiden Pufundt launched a shot from 25-yards out on the left wing that was corralled by Tigers' keeper Brayden McKuras. Olivet nearly got on the board in 23rd minute, but Brisbon dove to his right to deflect the ball away. Two minutes later Waubonsee broke the scoreless tie when Samuel Camacho put the ball into the center of the box. David Garcia quickly got the ball under control and spun around, blasting a shot into the left corner of the net from 10 yards out. Olivet Nazarene put some pressure on the Chiefs' defense as the first half wound down. Pufundt, Benedicte Ndijibu and Velazquez, who replaced Brisbon in goal for Waubonsee in the 30th minute, each made plays to keep the Tigers off the board. Coach Brett Suhayda's Chiefs went into the halftime break with a slim 1-0 lead.

As the second half started Waubonsee turned the tables on Olivet by pushing the tempo and keeping the Tigers back on their heels. The Chiefs assertiveness paid dividends as they added a second score in the 49th minute taking advantage of a breakdown on defense by the Tigers. McKuras came out from the net and Eduardo Cepeda drilled a shot from the left side past him and into the right side of the net from just five yards out. Waubonsee had two more opportunities to score in the next five minutes of play but misfired each time. In the 60th minute Olivet got a shot past Velazquez, but Camacho made a sensational sliding save to clear the ball away. Waubonsee continued to pepper the Olivet net with shots to no avail, until the 74th minute when Daniel Avila fed a perfect pass to Eric Anderson on a breakaway. The sophomore from Geneva drilled a shot on the move and past McKuras from point blank range for a 3-0 Chiefs lead and his fifth goal of the season.

Waubonsee is set to take the pitch again next Tuesday, September 12 when they host Elgin Community College in an Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference. The Chiefs and Spartans will kick off at 4:00 p.m. in Sugar Grove.
