Chiefs pull away to win opener

(Sugar Grove, IL) - Waubonsee Community College's women's basketball team pulled away in the second quarter and never looked back in trouncing Madison (WI) College 90-60 to open the 2022-23 season. Coach Jim Williams' crew out scored the visiting Wolfpack 30-12 in the second period to break open what had been a close game up to that point. For the game the Chiefs out scored Madison 22-6 in fast break points, owned a 54-26 advantage in points in the paint area and hauled down 25 offensive rebounds compared to just 11 for the Wolfpack. All nine Chiefs' players dented the scoring column and had at least one rebound.

Waubonsee had four players reach double-digits in scoring paced by Brooke Heiman's 18 points. The sophomore from Indian Creek High School also grabbed eight rebounds and made four steals. Ma'Liyah Hodges booked 16 points and made three steals, while Emily Hurst posted a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds to go along with four steals and three assists. Lily Fernandez added 12 points and dished out four assists to round out the Chiefs' quartet. Vivian Tapia nearly gave Waubonsee a fifth double-digit scorer as she tallied nine points and hauled down 10 rebounds, while Kaila Schlinger also snagged nine rebounds.

The Chiefs next three games are all on the road at the College of DuPage (Nov. 8), Illinois Valley (Nov. 10) and Rock Valley (Nov. 15). Waubonsee returns home to Erickson Hall on Thursday, November 17, when they host Black Hawk College starting at 5:00 p.m.
