(Sugar Grove, IL.) – Waubonsee Community College women's soccer team hosted 17th ranked Rock Valley College on Saturday afternoon. The short-handed Chiefs (1-1), who had downed Morton College 1-0 in their season opener, put up a valiant effort but could not keep pace with the Golden Eagles (3-0). Rock Valley, which recorded a pair of 3-2 wins over nationally ranked teams to begin the season, scored three late goals to top the Chiefs 4-0.
Waubonsee, playing down a player due to several early season injuries, had its best opportunity to get on the board in the 20th minute when Abby Broadway got off a 15-yard shot from the left side that Golden Eagles' keeper Kristina Vinger knocked away. Rock Valley then broke through in the 25th minute when Kassandra Jimenez blasted a shot past Waubonsee keeper Isabella Delgado from 10 yards out to make it 1-0. The visitors controlled much of the action throughout the first half and owned a large 17-3 advantage in shots overall. But they had just one score to show for it as Delgado registered six saves to make sure the match entered the break still 1-0.
However, Rock Valley's depth gradually began to wear down the Chiefs, who played the entire match without any substitutions. Delgado made another excellent save in the 61st minute as the Golden Eagles, who often subbed four fresh bodies into the game at a time, continued to pepper Waubonsee's goal with shots. Time and again the exhausted Chiefs' defense somehow managed the energy and stamina to rise to the occasion. Rock Valley had a shot hit the post in the 69th minute before finally breaking through for a second goal just a minute later. The Golden Eagles added a third score in 78th minute to begin to pull away.
Half a minute later Broadway got past the Rock Valley defense and launched a shot from 20 yards out. The ball glanced off the cross bar and caromed to the right where Vinger tracked it down. A foul in the box in the 80th minute gave the visitors a penalty kick, which the Golden Eagles' Isabelle Rivera converted to make it 4-0. For the match Rock Valley held a dominating 37-4 edge in shots overall and 21-4 in shots on goal, with Delgado finishing the game with 15 saves.
Coach Brad Schlemmer's squad is in action again on Wednesday, September 3, when they travel to south suburban Palos Hills to take on Moraine Valley Community College in an Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference match-up starting 4:00 p.m.
