Powerhouse Parkland overwhelms Chiefs

(Sugar Grove, IL.) – In their final match of the inaugural Chiefs Invitational Tournament, Waubonsee Community College squared off against national powerhouse Parkland College. The Cobras, NJCAA Division II National Champions two out of the last three years, overwhelmed the Chiefs in three straight games winning by scores of 25-17, 25-14 and 25-13. The premier squad at the 31-team Chiefs' Invitational Tournament, Parkland came into the match ranked second nationally in the NJCAA's Pre-season poll and owning an unblemished 7-0 record.

Parkland kept the Chiefs at bay throughout the first game with their size and quickness to win the opener by eight points. In game two the Cobras pulled away midway through to take a commanding two games to none lead. Waubonsee trailed just 12-9 in the third game before Parkland's depth and athleticism wore down Waubonsee and the Cobras pulled away for the sweep.

Maizy Larson and Kayla Battle each booked six kills for Waubonsee in the loss. Natalie Jones added 14 assists and two serving aces, while Kendall Iversen chipped in with 10 digs. For the match the Chiefs registered just two blocks against the Cobras big front row hitters.

The Chiefs (2-2) are in action again next weekend when they head to Perrysburg, Ohio to participate in the 25-team Owens Community College Invite beginning on Friday. Coach Steve Kish's squad returns home on Wednesday, September 5 as they host Oakton Community College in their Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference opener.
