Chiefs topple Panthers in home opener

(Sugar Grove, IL) - Waubonsee Community College's women's volleyball team steamrolled Morton College in it's home opener on Wednesday evening. The Chiefs (7-6, 1-0) reeled off the last 10 points to win the first game 25-12 and carried that momentum into the second set. Waubonsee tallied the first six points and led 13-1 at one point during game two, having earned 27 out of 30 points scored during one stretch. As a result the Chiefs coasted to a 25-8 victory before completing the sweep of the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC) match with a 25-10 win in game three.

Evelyn Martin began the match by recording two service aces to get Waubonsee started. A block and an ace by Jordan Weber staked the Chiefs to a 6-2 lead. A couple minutes later Waubonsee took an 11-6 lead when Kiara McPherson set up her twin sister Olivia McPherson for a kill from the left side. Holding a 15-12 lead, Waubonsee then booked 10 straight points to take the opener. Back-to-back service aces by Kiara McPherson highlighted the Chiefs' scoring binge. Waubonsee then picked up where it left off by scoring six straight to start game two. Their string of 16 straight points scored was only temporarily broken as the Chiefs registered the next seven points in a row for a 13-1 lead on an ace by Olivia McPherson. Two timeouts by the Panthers could not stop stem the tide as Waubonsee took a commanding 17-3 lead. The Chiefs finished off the game two triumph with another solo block by Weber and a Panthers' return shot that landed beyond the end line for the final point.

Olivia McPherson then elevated for a power kill to open game three. Moments later a kill shot by the Chiefs went out of bounds to put Morton ahead 2-1, their only lead of the entire evening. Waubonsee quickly regrouped and took a 10-5 lead when Kiara McPherson made a diving save just in front of the scorers table. Her return shot sailed just inside the post and into the score book when the Panthers subsequently hit the ball into the net. Waubonsee moved in front 14-7 after two straight connections between the McPherson twins, with Kiara assisting and Olivia finishing off with a power spike each time. Not long afterwards Olivia McPherson registered back-to-back aces to make it 23-10. A kill by Anna Gonzalez ended the game and match as the Chiefs prevailed in just over an hour from the opening serve.

Olivia McPherson ended the match with nine kills, four aces and 12 digs to lead the way for Waubonsee. Kiara McPherson booked 22 assists, had five service aces and a pair of solo blocks. Weber ended the evening with three blocks, Martin added three aces, and Kaylee Read assisted on four blocks. Waubonsee is not in action again until a week from today, Wednesday, Septemeber 8, when they host Moraine Valley Community College. The Chiefs and Cyclones are set to square off beginning at 6:00 p.m. Spectators are allowed, but are required to wear masks and adhere to current Covid protocols.
