The saying “Once a Chief, always a Chiefs” certainly epitomizes Charles Day III. Known as Chuck to teammates and friends, Day is a former Chiefs’ baseball player, and long-time supporter and ambassador of Waubonsee Athletics. His involvement and dedication to Waubonsee, along with his advocacy for the community college system are unapparelled.

Day graduated from Aurora West High School in 1975, where he pitched and played outfield for a Blackhawks’ baseball program that advanced to the Illinois state finals four straight years (1973-1976). He initially attended Western Illinois University before transferring back to Waubonsee in 1977. Day started in centerfield for the Chiefs in 1978 and 1979, was a team captain and earned All-Skyway honors as a sophomore after batting .458 in conference play. When he walked off the field for the final time, Day held the fourth highest single-season batting average and fifth best fielding percentage for a Waubonsee outfielder up to that point. At one time Day also held Waubonsee’s record for career relief appearances as a pitcher, finishing with a 3-0 record, one save and the lowest earned-run-average on the team. As a matter of fact, Day was the winning pitcher in Hall of Fame coach Dave Randall’s first career win in 1978. And he was in Tyler, Texas in 2014 at the NJCAA Division III World Series when Randall collected career win number 895, becoming the only person to witness the first and last wins of the legendary coach’s career.

Beginning in 1976 Day was a player/manager for the Marcley Oil baseball team, guiding the organization to eight Aurora Municipal League titles in 10 summer seasons. Day returned to Waubonsee and served as the women’s and men’s basketball official scorer for 23 seasons, covering nearly 700 Chiefs’ home games during that time. Since then, the “Super Fan” has continued to be a fixture at Chiefs’ basketball and baseball over the years, attending hundreds of games both at home and on the road, including several Waubonsee national tournament appearances.

Day earned an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Criminal Justice from Waubonsee in 1979 and then embarked on a 41-year career in the insurance industry. He worked with his father at his family’s agency, Day Insurance for over two decades before helping to procure the sale of the company. During that time, he resumed his education as an adult student at Waubonsee before going on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in Organizational and Corporate Communications from Northern Illinois University in 1990. Day also worked for several other insurance carriers, handling multiple million-dollar accounts before retiring from the insurance industry in 2020.

He has remained active in the community, working for the Aurora Civic Center Authority assisting with events at the Paramount Arts Centre, Copley Theatre, and RiverEdge Park. Day also coached soccer and basketball in the Oswegoland Park District for five years. An avid runner, he has competed in 12 Triathlons and numerous local 5K races throughout the years. Day and his wife Kim live in Aurora and have two grown children, twin daughters Shannon and Kirsten.
