
Waubonsee Community College's baseball team had seven players recognized by the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC) and the NJCAA's Region IV Committee for their performances this past spring on the field. Chiefs' centerfielder Dolan Nicholson, shortstop and part-time pitcher Garrett Goetz and pitcher Logan Love were all named to the All-ISCC First Team. Pitcher Jordan Isham, outfielder Joshua Meyers, third baseman and pitcher Justin Sartori, and first baseman Aaron Lange were each selected All-ISCC Second Team. Nicholson was the lone Chiefs' player chosen to the All-Region First Team, while Goetz and Love were both tabbed to the All-Region Second Team.
Nicholson, a sophomore from Denton, Texas, batted .406 on the season with a team-leading 54 runs scored and 20 stolen bases in 25 attempts. The left-handed hitter registered 73 hits including 15 doubles, five triples and a home run. The Chiefs' 6'0" 180-lb lead-off hitter posted a .446 on-base percentage, a .561 slugging percentage and a .951 fielding percentage anchoring Waubonsee's outfield defense.
Goetz, a freshman from Oswego East High School, led the Chiefs with a .417 batting average and a team-leading 48 runs batted in. The Chiefs' shortstop also booked 73 hits with 17 doubles, five triples and a home run, while stealing 18 bases in 19 attempts. The right-handed hitter finished the season with a .589 slugging percentage and a .472 on-base percentage to go along with 48 runs scored. In addition, Goetz made a dozen appearances on the mound picking up two wins while striking out 55 batters over 44 and two-thirds innings of work.
Love, a right-handed pitcher from Aurora West High School, finished the season with a 6-3 record and a 2.24 earned-run-average. The sophomore struck out 63 hitters in 52 and a third innings pitched while walking only nine. Love was also the runner-up for Waubonsee's Most Improved Male Athlete Award for the 2017-18 school year.
Meyers, a Marmion Academy product, finished the season with a .317 batting average overall with 39 runs scored, 12 doubles, four triples a home run and 14 stolen bases in 18 tries. The Chiefs' right-fielder will be continuing his collegiate career at NCAA Division II affiliate Shorter University in Georgia.
Isham led Waubonsee's pitching staff with seven wins on the spring. The freshman from Sandwich High School made nine starts on the mound, tossing three complete games and a shutout. The right-hander finished 7-2 with a 2.72 earned-run-average, while striking out 58 hitters in 59 and two-thirds innings of work and posting a team-leading 1.14 WHIP average.
Sartori, also a freshman from Sandwich High School, batted .362 with a team-leading 19 doubles to go along with 46 runs driven in. The right-handed batter scored 36 runs, stole a dozen bases in 14 attempts, posted a .503 slugging percentage, was hit-by-pitch 11 times and had a .411 on-base percentage. Sartori also made nine appearances on the mound going 3-1 with a save and a 3.30 earned-run-average.
Lange, a 6'5" 295-lb. first baseman batted .306 on the season with 24 runs batted in 35 starts. The native of Valparaiso, Indiana, ripped four doubles, a pair of triples and a home run. Lange also registered a .987 fielding percentage, making just three errors in 225 chances.
On the season head coach Brad Unger's Chiefs finished 28-21 overall, despite suffering numerous injuries to key pitchers throughout the season. After a 14-6 start Waubonsee was ranked as high as eighth nationally before falling out of the NJCAA's Division III poll. In ISCC play the Chiefs finished fourth in the eight-team league, compiling a 10-9 conference mark.
