Chiefs' Lovesky Named NJCAA Player of the Week

(Charlotte, NC.) - Waubonsee Community College's Gavin Lovesky was named the NJCAA Division III Baseball Player of the Week for the week of March 11 through 17. The Chiefs' 6'2" 185-pound first baseman batted .560 with 12 runs driven in, eight extra base hits and 10 runs scored to help Waubonsee start the season with six straight wins. The sophomore from Lockport High School went 14 for 25 at the plate, ripping five doubles, a pair of triples and a home run en route to posting a 1.040 slugging percentage over six games. The right-handed hitter had an extra base hit in every game, tallying 26 total bases, and knocked in multiple runs in five of the six contests.  

Waubonsee opened the 2019 season with a 14-4 drubbing of Mesabi (MN) Technical College on March 13 in the first game of their annual spring trip to central Florida. The Chiefs then swept a doubleheader from Eric (NY) Community College the next day, pouncing on the Kats 15-6 and 11-1. Waubonsee's bats stayed hot as they shutout Lakeland (OH) Community College 10-0 on March 15. Coach Brad Unger's squad then improved to 6-0 the following day by defeating the Community College of Rhode Island 7-4 and Illinois Tech's Junior Varsity 7-6.

The Chiefs finished up their Florida trip with a 6-4 record overall, dropping their final four games. Nationally-ranked Century (MN) College rallied to beat the Chiefs 8-7 on March 18. Waubonsee lost a pair of games to Hudson Valley (NY) Community College the next day 12-6 and 10-4. The Chiefs finished up their southern swing with another tough, one-run loss 11-10 to Sussex County (NJ) Community College yesterday. Waubonsee is set to play Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference foe McHenry County College tomorrow, March 22 in their home opener. Game time for the single, 9-inning conference contest is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. in Sugar Grove.
