Chiefs slide past O-H before rains halt game two

(Sugar Grove, IL.) – Between raindrops and soggy field conditions, Waubonsee Community College downed visiting Olive-Harvey College 2-0 behind a stellar pitching performance by Luke Fitton. The Chiefs led game two by the same score going into the top of the third before a sudden downpour postponed the contest. The two teams will resume the game on Thursday, April 18 when the Chiefs go to Chicago to play the Panthers for a previously scheduled doubleheader.

In game one the Chiefs (11-15) scored twice in the bottom of the first on sacrifice-fly balls by Gavin Lovesky and Hogan McIntosh. That was all the support that Fitton needed against the Panthers. The Chiefs' sophomore right-hander limited Olive-Harvey (6-11) to a pair of singles en route to tossing a complete game shutout. Fitton struck out seven and walked just one, allowing only four Panthers to reach base all game. Mark Sommers paced Waubonsee's offense with a singles, two walks, two stolen bases and a run scored.

Game two the Panthers threatened in the top of second getting runners to second and third with no outs. The Chiefs' Jordan Isham buckled down and struck the next three batters out to walk off the mound unscathed. Waubonsee used that momentum swing to take the lead in the bottom half of the inning. McIntosh led off with a single to left field and stole second shortly thereafter. He moved up to third on a fly out and then scored when Cameron Steffen reached base on a swinging bunt base hit down the third base line. Michael Maynard then followed with a ringing double over the right fielder's head to score Steffen. As the Chiefs took the field a couple minutes later in the top of the third the skies opened up and quickly swamped an already saturated Waubonsee diamond.

The Chiefs are next in action this coming Tuesday, April 9 when they travel to Cicero to play Morton College in a single, 9-inning Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference battle. Waubonsee is slated to return home on Thursday, April 11 when they host Aurora University's Junior Varsity at 3:00 p.m. in a single, 9-inning contest.
