(Sugar Grove, IL.) - Over 50 years of Waubonsee Community College baseball was represented on Sunday afternoon in the Sugar Grove campus Field House. All three of the head coaches to ever lead Waubonsee's baseball program were on hand for the inaugural Chiefs' Baseball Alumni Day. Former coaches Bill Prince and Dave Randall, along with current head coach Brad Unger and his 2019 team, greeted a handful of baseball alumni and their families who attended the indoor reception after the Chiefs' home doubleheader was rained out. After being formally introduced, Prince and Randall symbolically tossed a ceremonial first pitch to current Chiefs' catchers Hogan McIntosh and Matt Burke. Prince, Randall and Unger then each spoke to the assembled crowd and touched on the history of Chiefs' baseball. Alumni were also given a tour of the Field House complex and renovated Erickson Hall, enjoyed pizza and light refreshments, and received Chiefs' Alumni key chains. 

Prince was the school's first head baseball coach along with being Waubonsee's first Athletic Director, Physical Education instructor and Physical Education Department Chairman. He held all those positions simultaneously for seven years beginning in 1967. Prince's Chiefs played their home games initially at Solfisburg Park on Aurora's northeast side before beginning play on campus in 1971. During his tenure Prince led the Chiefs to a pair of Skyway Conference baseball titles, with his 1973 team finishing fifth in the Region IV Tournament when all 45 community colleges in Illinois competed in one division. His 1974 team was the first at Waubonsee to ever be nationally ranked, and his 1975 squad made it all the way to the Region IV Championship game.     

Randall, who played for Prince in 1972 and 1973, returned to serve as his assistant coach in 1977. Coach Prince then handed off the program to Randall who led the Chiefs to 895 wins over the next 37 seasons. When he stepped aside, Randall was just one of two NJCAA Division III baseball coaches with over 800 wins. His teams won six Skyway Conference titles, five Region crowns, and reached the Region IV title game six other times. Randall's teams earned four NJCAA Divsion III World Series berths, finishing as National Runner-up in 1996. His 2010 squad finished seventh, his 2013 crew finished third in the nation, and his final team in 2014 finished fourth in the nation.  

Unger played for Randall in 2001, earning All-Skyway and All-Region honors as a catcher. He took over Waubonsee's program in 2015 and has averaged 32 wins a season the last three years. His 2016 team won 37 games and advanced to the NJCAA Division III World Series in North Carolina, where they finished seventh in the nation. Subsequently, Unger was named the Region IV and NJCAA District B Coach of the Year that season.
