Chiefs set to begin Region Tournament play

(Rockford, IL.) - Waubonsee Community College's baseball team was seeded fourth for the upcoming double-elimination Region IV Division III Tournament. The Chiefs (26-21) are set to play fifth-seeded Milwaukee Area (WI.) Technical College (17-19) this coming Thursday, May 9 beginning at noon in Rockford. Top-seeded Rock Valley College (38-15), ranked eighth in the last regular season NJCAA Division III poll, is the host site. The winner between the Chiefs and Stormers will play the Golden Eagles at 3:00 p.m., while the loser will play a yet-to-be-determined opponent the following day at 9:00 a.m. in an elimination contest.

Joliet Junior College (22-21) is the second seed, with defending National Champion Oakton Community College (30-18) the third seed and Illinois Valley Community College (13-19) the sixth seed. The Owls and Eagles are set to square off Thursday at noon on Joliet's Wayne King Field, with the winner facing the Wolves at 3:00 p.m. All games thereafter on Friday, Saturday and Sunday will be played in Rockford on Rock Valley's field.

The Chiefs enter the post-season having won 11 of their last 16 games. Head coach Brad Unger's squad is led by Lockport native Gavin Lovesky who is batting .407 with 10 doubles, five triples and three home runs. Freshman catcher Hogan McIntosh is batting .394 and leads the team with 18 doubles and 39 runs batted in. Oswego East High School graduate Garrett Goetz enters the playoffs with a .368 average, a team-leading 57 hits and 43 runs scored, 17 doubles, 33 runs driven in and 14 stolen bases. Justin Sartori, a sophomore from Sandwich High School, is batting .328 with four home runs and 27 runs knocked in, while leadoff man Mark Sommers is hitting .320 with a team-leading 17 stolen bases. Luke Fitton leads the Chiefs' pitching staff with four wins and a 3.72 earned run average. The hard throwing right-handed hurler has struck out 66 batters in 53 and two-thirds innings pitched.
