Goetz resets Chiefs’ record book

(Rockford, IL.) – Over 53 seasons of baseball at Waubonsee Community College no one has done what Garrett Goetz has. Last weekend during the Region IV Division III Tournament at Rock Valley College, the sophomore from Oswego East High School firmly etched his name in the Chiefs' record book. The right-handed hitter established new Waubonsee marks for career hits, runs batted in, doubles and at bats; along with a new single-season mark for doubles.

In Waubonsee's second round 13-11 victory over top-seeded and eighth ranked Rock Valley, Goetz went 4 for 6 with a pair of doubles, a grand-slam home run and six runs driven in. In the process he eclipsed Bob Stehman's career record of 133 hits set in 1997 and 1998. He also passed Cory Walden's career mark of 86 runs batted in compiled during the 2010 and 2011 seasons. In addition, that same game he surpassed Klay Nafzinger's career tally of 34 doubles established over the 2016 and 2017 seasons, and teammate Justin Sartori's single-season mark of 19 doubles set last year. Two days later in the Chiefs' second to last game of the season he also bettered Bobby Smith's career number of 353 at bats set during the 2013 and 2014 seasons.

Goetz finished his Chiefs' career with 143 hits, 92 runs batted in, 40 doubles and 360 at bats to sit atop all of those categories in Waubonsee baseball history. He ended this season with 23 doubles to establish another new mark. The Chiefs' infielder also ended his Chiefs' career with the second most runs scored with 98, just shy of Ryan Schroeder's mark of 103 created in 1998 and 1999. Goetz appeared in every game Waubonsee played the last two years to finish third all-time with 99 games played. He finished his Waubonsee career with a .397 batting average, a .457 on-base percentage, a .572 slugging percentage, 34 stolen bases and 206 total bases over the last two years.
