MVCC chills Chiefs' bats in ISCC doubleheader sweep

(Sugar Grove, IL.) – Waubonsee Community College and Moraine Valley Community College squared off in an Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC) doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon. The Chiefs (4-23, 0-4) could not get any timely hits as the Cyclones (14-16, 2-0) took the opener 4-0. Moraine Valley then jumped out to a big lead early in game two and cruised to an 12-1 victory in five innings to complete the sweep.

Moraine Valley got on the board in the top of the second scoring twice with the aid of a pair of errors by the Chiefs. After Waubonsee stranded a pair of runners in their half of the second, the Cyclones added another run in the third to make it 3-0 before leaving the bases loaded. The Chiefs loaded the bases in the bottom of the third with two walks and a hit batsman. However, Cyclones' starter Xavier Aguilar wiggled out of the jam getting Waubonsee catcher Chase Gabel to line out to right field for the third out.

The visitors tacked on a fourth run in the top of the fourth courtesy of two errors and a wild pitch. Cameron Hull then registered Waubonsee's first hit with a push bunt down the first base line with two outs in the bottom of the fourth. But he was left there as Moraine Valley carried a 4-0 lead into the fifth inning. The Chiefs loaded the bases again in the bottom of the fifth on a walk, error and hit batsman with two outs. But Aguilar escaped unscathed by getting a strikeout to keep his shutout intact.

Chiefs' starter Joel Lively took the loss throwing four innings, striking out five, walking four and allowing three earned runs on four hits. Backed by a couple of outstanding defensive plays by shortstop Dylan Conklin, Jacob Cronshaw tossed three innings of scoreless relief. Waubonsee could not take advantage of five walks and two hit batters by Aguilar on the way to stranding 10 runners on base for the game.

In game two the Cyclones jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the first off Chiefs' starter LeBaron Lee. Moraine Valley utilized a bloop double down the left field line, a pair of walks, an error and a two-out run-scoring single to tally their three runs. The Cyclones broke it open in the second inning booking five more runs on three hits, two walks, a hit batter and two errors to knock Lee out of the game, who allowed only three earned runs. In the third inning Moraine Valley's Andrew Phelan ripped a two-out double down the right field line, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored a moment later via a single to right by Caston Norris to make it 9-0.

The Cyclones scored two more in the fourth before Gabel gunned down Phelan trying to steal second for the third out. It was the first time the fleet-footed lead-off hitter was thrown out this season after 25 successful thefts on the bases. Moraine Valley pushed across a single run in the top of the fifth to extend the lead to 12-0. Waubonsee finally got on the board in the bottom half of the frame when Carson Baker's ground ball down the first base line hit the bag and bounded into right field. Baker legged it out for a one-out double and then advanced to third when Andrew Hernandez blooped a single to left field. Baker scored three pitches later when Ben Hernandez grounded out to second base spoiling the shutout bid by Cyclones' pitcher Joshua Keller. Waubonsee is also slated to be in action again this coming Saturday, April 12 when they travel to the College of Lake County for an ISCC doubleheader starting at noon in Grayslake.
