Playing in the GGLeagues top division, an intramural-level league primarily featuring other colleges across the central United States, Waubonsee Community College's Esports team began the 2020 fall season with a two games to one League of Legends victory over the University of Akron (OH) Acers.

Playing their first competitive match of the season, a somewhat nervous Chiefs' team got off to a slow start in game one. Although the Chiefs' draft went as planned, poor execution early on led to a deficit in their top lane matchup. Midway through the game Waubonsee's bottom lane duo took over and played team fights superbly. Quentin McDougle's (Nautilus) found multiple dredge lines onto enemy carries during team fights, enabling Miguel Contreras' (Ashe) to do his job and mow through all the enemy champions. "Through sharp, concise, decision-making and grit to survive to the late game, we were able to win game one," declared Chiefs' head coach Jarod Ericksen.

Through some shrewd drafting for game two, the Acers adapted their strategy and were able to slow the Chiefs' momentum with multiple safe lanes. After a nine-minute stalemate the Acers drew first blood in the top lane and from there found small advantages which ultimately led to an (Ezreal) quadra kill. The Acers claimed game two in a 25-minute romp to even the best two-out-of-three series at a game apiece.

The Chiefs quickly put the lopsided loss behind them as they headed into the decisive third game with a new plan. That strategy revolved around picking (Irelia), mid-laner Jacob Goddard's his signature champion. In the previous two games the Acers had been banning out (Irelia) during the drafting process. Prior to game three the Chiefs were able to secure (Irelia) in the first round of picks. Waubonsee then focused their bans on the Acers more reserved and safe champions, helping set themselves up for success before the game even began. Securing multiple kills early on, Goddard was unstoppable and sparked the entire Chiefs' attack. Waubonsee went on to win multiple lanes and cruised to the game three triumph to take the match two games to one.

The Chiefs (1-0) are set to continue League of Legends play on Wednesday, September 23, when they square off against Illinois State University's Junior Varsity.
