Chiefs fall to JWCC in Rocket League playoffs

Waubonsee Community College's Esports team was knocked out of the NJCAA Rocket League playoffs. The seventh-seeded Chiefs fell to second-seeded John Wood (IL) Community College (JWCC) four games to two in the best four-out-of-seven series. The Chiefs (6-3) and Blazers (9-2) were deadlocked at two games apiece before technical difficulties halted play Tuesday evening prior to the start of game five. When play resumed Wednesday afternoon the Blazers utilized a scoring blitz in each of the next two games to win the match. Out of 36 junior colleges competing in Rocket League nationwide, only the top eight qualified for the post-season tournament.

In the opening game the Blazers won 3-1 as the Chiefs narrowly avoided the shutout. Zachary Stephenson scored Waubonsee's lone goal with just :08 remaining. The Chiefs got on track offensively in second game and tied things at 3-all midway through the game on a goal by Cameron Davis. The score stayed knotted at three sending the game into a sudden death overtime. Just 0:25 into the extra session, Davis stole the ball and directed it toward the Blazers' goal where Stephenson's shot attempt was just off the mark. However, Waubonsee's Timothy Schramek quickly followed up the miss by tapping in the rebound to give the Chiefs a 4-3 victory. Schramek finished the game with two goals, an assist and a save, while Davis registered two goals and two saves, and Stephenson tallied three assists.

The Blazers again controlled much of the action in the third game as they out shot the Chiefs 9-3 on the way to a 3-0 shutout. Waubonsee again responded and pulled out a hard fought 4-3 win in the fourth game to even the series. In a see-saw affair, Davis scored all four of Waubonsee's goals in just four shots, the final one with 0:57 left to put the Chiefs in front. Coach Jarod Ericksen's trio also made several great defensive plays over the final two minutes to hang on for the win as the Blazers owned a 12-5 advantage in shots on goal. Besides his four scores, Davis also contributed three saves. Stephenson recorded two assists and two saves, and Schramek had an assist and a save in the triumph.

However, the Chiefs' momentum was cut off heading into the fifth game when technical difficulties arose. In a year in which disruption and uncertainty have become the norm, once again adjustments had to be made. The completion of the match was postponed until the following afternoon, resuming at 2:00 p.m. CDT. A rejuvenated JWCC team rebounded to win both contests on Wednesday with a flurry of scores in each game. After the Blazers scored 0:28 into the fifth game, Schramek tied the game at the 2:49 mark as he followed up his own miss to tap the ball in goal. John Wood then blitzed the Chiefs with four goals over a 0:58 span to take a commanding lead on the way to a 5-1 win.

The Blazers again grabbed the early lead in game six before Stephenson scored off a miss by Davis to tie it at 1-all just a minute in. But once again JWCC responded with an offensive onslaught, scoring five times over a minute and a half stretch to bolt ahead 6-1. Davis then closed out the scoring with just 0:16 remaining, registering his seventh goal of the match, as the Chiefs fell 6-2. Davis also booked nine saves and had an assist, while Schramek was credited with three goals, two assists and seven saves, and Stephenson contributed two goals, six assists and five saves overall during the match.
