Chiefs hold off McHenry in ISCC action

 

(Sugar Grove, IL.) –  Waubonsee Community College's men's basketball team pulled away down the stretch to defeat visiting McHenry County College 79-66. The Chiefs' dominated play in close to the basket, out scoring the Scots 42-14 in the paint while winning the rebounding war 45-32. The victory improved Waubonsee's overall record to 14-8 and 5-3 in Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC) play.

The Chiefs shot 51.5 percent (17 of 33) in the first half, yet only led 40-37 at the break. The Scots nailed nine three-point baskets in the first period to stay within striking distance. The game remained close until the midway point of the second half. Trailing 55-53, the Chiefs reeled off 18 of the game's next 19 points to surge ahead 71-56 with five minutes remaining. Waubonsee then maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way to keep McHenry winless in ISCC action.

Demetrius Ewing nearly booked a triple-double to pace Waubonsee's attack. The sophomore forward scored 20 points, grabbed 15 rebounds and handed out nine assists. Deland "DJ" Deere added 15 points and four assists, while Darnell Wright tallied 10 points and hauled in eight rebounds. Jacob Niesman dished out four assists, Christopher Henderson snagged seven boards, and Kevin Jackson and Jake Pike each contributed eight points in the win. McHenry's Leon Nelson led all scorers with 21 points, connecting on seven shots from beyond the arc.

Waubonsee's next game is Tuesday, February 6, 2018 when they host Elgin Community College. Coach Jim Williams' women's team tips off at 5:15 p.m. against the Scots, while Coach Dave Heiss' men's team is set to square off at 7:15 p.m. (CDT).
