South Suburban keeps Chiefs at bay

(Sugar Grove, IL.) - Waubonsee Community College could never quite catch highly touted South Suburban College. The undefeated Bulldogs, ranked second nationally in the NJCAA's Division II Pre-Season poll, held off the Chiefs all game before settling with an 84-66 victory. Waubonsee was its own worst enemy committing 22 turnovers for the game with many of them being unforced errors. The Chiefs (3-2) also played without two starters. Sophomore center Josh McAuley, who is second nationally among NJCAA Division II players in scoring at 29.8 points-per-game, and sophomore forward Christopher Henderson, were both sidelined with injuries.

South Suburban quickly took advantage of their absence and Waubonsee miscues. Shortly after the opening tip-off the Bulldogs (6-0) raced out to a 13-0 lead sparked by three quick baskets by high-scoring Rhyss Lewis. The 6'2" sophomore guard entered the contest leading the nation in scoring averaging 32 points per game. The Chiefs had no answer for him all night as Lewis finished the game with 39 points, including making all 15 of the free throw attempts he took in the game. As a matter of fact, midway through the second half the Chesterton, Indiana native scored 18 straight Bulldog points.

Meanwhile, Waubonsee trimmed the deficit down to five points twice in the first half, but turnovers allowed the Bulldogs to build up their lead once more. South Suburban eventually took a 41-27 lead into the break courtesy of 16 points off Chiefs' turnovers and 15 second chance points resulting from 13 first half offensive rebounds. Seven minutes into the second half Waubonsee got to within 49-41 before the Bulldogs built their lead up to 18 points just three minutes later aided by three Chiefs' turnovers and eight made free throws from four Waubonsee fouls. The Chiefs never got closer than 14 points the rest of the way.

Jymil Toney led Waubonsee with 14 points, while Bradlee Mills posted a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Simeon Strauss also netted 13 points and dished out three assists, Cory Adams Jr. added 10 points, Jacqui Orr handed out three assists and Aubrey House grabbed six rebounds. Waubonsee is in action again this coming Thursday evening when they host the North Central College Junior Varsity beginning at 7:00 p.m.
