Chiefs down McHenry to stay undefeated in ISCC

(Sugar Grove, IL.) –  Waubonsee Community College remained undefeated in Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC) play with a pedestrian 69-60 victory over visiting McHenry County College. The Chiefs kept the Scots at bay throughout much of the game to move their ISCC record to 6-0 and 14-7 overall. Waubonsee, after downing the College of Lake County 86-74 behind Josh McAuley's 41 point, 11 rebound effort less than 24 hours earlier in Grayslake, looked fatigued throughout the game.

As a matter of fact, both teams looked sluggish at the outset. Five minutes into the game the Chiefs had just four points, but the Scots were scoreless. A three-point basket by Kriston Dixon put the Chiefs in front 7-0 before McHenry finally got on the scoreboard via a free throw by Maki Mohr six minutes into the game. A trio of three-pointers by Alec St. Pierre kept the Scots in the game as both teams began to get on track. Inside baskets by McAuley and Jymil Toney pushed the Chiefs' lead to 22-14 midway through the half. Waubonsee led by as many as 12 points (28-16) before settling with a 38-30 lead at the break.

The Chiefs built a double-digit lead early in the second half, but McHenry stayed within striking distance. A put back basket by Collman Aaron midway through the half put the Chiefs in front 51-43. Waubonsee grabbed its biggest lead at 61-46 with four minutes left on a pair of free throws by Koby Johnson. The Scots were not able to get their deficit to single digits until they tallied the contest's final five points in the waning seconds.

McAuley finished the game with 18 points, six rebounds, five blocked shots and three assists to lead the Chiefs. Elijah Marto tallied 13 points and Simeon Strauss chipped in with 11 points. Bradlee Mills snagged eight boards, while Johnson and Addison Bode each dished out three assists.

The Chiefs are in action again next Tuesday, February 5 when they travel to south suburban Palos Hills to battle nationally ranked Moraine Valley Community College. Jim Williams' women's team set to play the fifth-ranked Cyclones beginning at 5:15 p.m. while Dave Heiss' men's squad takes the court at 7:15 p.m. (CDT). Waubonsee returns home next Thursday, February 7 when they host Prairie State College with the women's game starting at 5:15 p.m. and the men's contest at 7:15 p.m. in Erickson Hall.
