Chiefs move to 10-4 overall with win over O-H

(Sugar Grove, IL) – Behind the three-point shooting of Cam Irvin and the inside play by Courtney Fields, Waubonsee Community College men's basketball team downed Olive-Harvey College from Chicago 100-89. The win pushes the Chiefs' overall record to 10-4 with one game remaining before beginning the holiday break.

Waubonsee got off to a quick start taking a 12-4 lead on a three-pointer from the right wing by Fields. Caleb Siler powered his way to an inside basket to put the Chiefs in front 27-18 midway through the first half. The Panthers (5-10) clawed to within a point at 28-27 on a lay-in by Gavin Alston with seven minutes left in the period. A moment later Aurora West alumnus Traevon Brown gave Olive-Harvey its first lead of the game on a close range basket. The lead was short-lived however as Waubonsee went on a 20-11 run to grab a 48-40 lead heading into the locker room.

The Chiefs also started the second half quickly, going on a 13-6 run to take a 15-point lead five minutes into the period. Again Olive-Harvey battled back getting to within five points before a pair of long three-pointers by Irvin helped the Chiefs push the lead back to double digits at 71-61 with 11 minutes to go. The teams traded baskets over the next four minutes until the Panthers again pulled within striking distance at 82-78 with seven minutes left. Sparked by Irvin and Fields, Waubonsee responded once more with a 15-4 run over the next three minutes to take control of the game. Irvin then nailed his sixth triple of the game, well beyond the three-point line, as the Chiefs reached the century mark with a minute to go.

Fields led all scorers with 27 points on 10 baskets and a pair of three-pointers. Irvin finished with 24, booking 22 second half points, including six treys. Point guard D.J. Ellis added 23 points and Siler chipped in with 10 points to give Waubonsee four players in double figures. Brown led Olive-Harvey with 23 points in his return to the area.

The Chiefs are in action again on this coming Thursday, December 19 when they travel to Dixon to take on Sauk Valley Community College. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. (CDT) following the women's contest starting at 5:30 p.m. Coach Lance Robinson's men's team will then be idle for 15 days until heading to Wauwatosa, Wisconsin to battle Bryant & Stratton College on Saturday, January 4. The Chiefs and Bobcats are scheduled to take the floor at Mount Mary University beginning at 3:00 p.m. The women's contest is slated for 1:00 p.m. that afternoon.
