(Sugar Grove, IL) - Waubonsee Community College's men's basketball team served notice that to win this year's Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC) title, teams may have to go through Sugar Grove. Led by D.J. Ellis' triple-double, the Chiefs jumped all over two-time defending ISCC champion Morton College right from the start and cruised to an 87-65 victory. In the process Waubonsee improved to 13-6 overall and remained at the top of the ISCC standings with a 3-0 mark.

After observing a moment of silence before the game in memory and honor of long-time Chiefs' Athletic Trainer Phil Jacobs, who passed away a week ago after a battle with cancer, Waubonsee proceeded to make a lot of noise after that. The Chiefs nailed four three-pointers and stifled the Panthers' offense on the way to grabbing a 20-5 lead six minutes into the game. Waubonsee built the lead up to 21 points at 32-11 with five minutes left in the first half before Morton (8-10, 1-2) out scored the Chiefs 10-9 to close out the half trailing 41-21. The Panthers never got closer than 17 points in the second half as Waubonsee led by as many as 29 points on a couple occasions midway through the second half. 

Ellis finished the game with 19 points, 15 rebounds and 10 assists to lead the way. Simeon Strauss added 17 points, while Caleb Siler came off the bench to score 11 points and grab six boards. Asa Williams chipped in with 10 points, and Courtney Fields tallied nine points to go along with snagging six rebounds and handing out four assists. Nine different Chiefs' players dented the scoring column as Waubonsee tallied 22 assists as a team. Morton, which made just 5 of 30 (16 percent) three-point attempts for the game, was led in scoring by Latvia native Toms Kedis with 21 points.

The Chiefs next game is this coming Thursday, January 16 when they host Oakton Community College at 7:15 p.m. Waubonsee's women's team is set to square off against Moraine Valley Community College in a non-conference affair prior to that at 5:15 p.m.
