Chiefs Overwhelm Visiting Rams

(Sugar Grove, IL) -  Waubonsee Community College's men's basketball team used its depth to overwhelm Wright College 101-47 on Saturday afternoon. The Chiefs, now 2-1 on the season, had 14 different players dent the scoring column on the way to keeping the visiting Rams from Chicago winless at 0-4 overall. All 16 Chiefs' players in uniform played and contributed to the lopsided victory.

In the first two minutes of play neither team could score on their first several possessions. Waubonsee's Colton Schutt then broke the scoreless tie when he buried a three-point shot from the right wing. A moment later the freshman from Yorkville Christian High School made a steal just across mid court and raced in for a two-handed jam and a quick 5-0 Waubonsee lead. An offensive rebound and put back by Brice Langford and a steal and quick lay-in by Jaylyn Kelley put the Chiefs in front 13-4 as they gradually built their lead.

Head Coach Lance Robinson then began utilizing his bench to wear down the visiting Rams, with 13 different Chiefs' players seeing action in the first half. A driving lay-up in traffic and another 12-foot jump shot by Traevon Brown in quick succession extended Waubonsee's lead to 29-10 with eight minutes left until halftime. Two minutes later Cam Russell scored on another drive to the basket to increase the Chiefs' lead to 33-12 as they began to pull away. Waubonsee closed out the half on a 29-7 run to secure a comfortable 48-17 lead going into the intermission.

The Chiefs expanded their lead early in the second half, going ahead 63-27 six minutes in, highlighted by a pair of three-pointers by Kelley. Relentless man-to-man defense by Waubonsee helped the home team build an 84-32 lead with eight minutes to go. The Chiefs capped off the blowout win by reaching the century mark in the final minute of play on a three-pointer by Rio Goodwin.

Waubonsee was led in scoring by Kelley who finished with 19 points, including four baskets from beyond the arc. He also recorded four steals, while Schutt added 16 points, Brown chipped in with 12 points, and McKyron Tucker registered 10 points and hauled down six boards. Jordan Jenkins contributed nine points, Marco Wilson booked seven points, Langford grabbed nine rebounds, blocked three shots and tallied seven points, and Anthony Thompson handed out five assists.

The Chiefs are in action again this coming Tuesday, November 16 when they host Concordia University-Chicago's Junior Varsity. The Chiefs and Cougars are scheduled to tip-off at 7:00 p.m. (CDT) in Sugar Grove.
