Chiefs score lopsided win over Lancers

(Sugar Grove, IL) – Waubonsee Community College's men's basketball team got back on track Thursday evening with a lopsided 96-60 win over the College of Lake County. Not surprisingly, after Covid-19 related issues kept them off the court for five weeks, the Chiefs looked out of sync in their first game back on Tuesday evening against visiting Moraine Valley Community College. The Cyclones (10-5, 1-1) were in complete control on the way to taking the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC) match-up 90-74. However, against the Lancers coach Lance Robinson's Chiefs jumped out to a big lead and never looked back to even their ISCC record at 1-1 and overall mark to 8-3.

Finally, at full strength with their entire roster dressed, Waubonsee jumped on the visiting Lancers (2-9, 0-2) with stifling defense to grab a 17-2 lead only minutes into the game. The Chiefs grabbed their biggest lead at 46-12 with three minutes left in the half. Lake County then put together a 12-5 run to show some life as the first half wound down. A driving lay-up by Joey Niesman in the final seconds staked the Chiefs to a 50-24 lead at the break.

A two-handed dunk by Brice Langford two-minutes into the second half started a quick 7-0 run for the Chiefs. Two minutes later a three-point play by Niesman staked the Chiefs to a comfortable 64-29 lead, their biggest up to that point. Waubonsee maintained around a 30-point lead throughout much of the next 10 minutes of play. A breakaway, two-handed slam and three-point play on consecutive trips down the floor by Cam Russell pushed the Chiefs' lead to 85-47 with seven minutes to go. A trey from the left corner by Brennen McNally then extended the lead to 92-49 with four minutes remaining as the Chiefs coasted to victory.

Niesman led Waubonsee with 24 points, six rebounds and three assists. Langford contributed a double-double with 17 points and 11 boards, while Marco Wilson chipped in with 11 points and six rebounds. Traevon Brown nearly joined them in double figures as he tallied nine points and handed out five assists. Russell also finished with nine points, and Jaylynn Kelley dished out five assists. The Chiefs are in action again this coming Saturday, January 15 when they host Elgin Community College in an ISCC match-up beginning at noon. Due to the local community's increasing cases of COVID-19, no spectators will are allowed at any Waubonsee athletic events through January 30.
