
(Charlotte, NC) - Waubonsee Community College's Men's Basketball team moved into the national rankings this week. Coach Lance Robinson's Chiefs (2-0) are ranked 20th in the first in-season NJCAA Division II poll after impressive wins over Madison (WI) College and the College of DuPage. Waubonsee opened its' season with a 97-74 win over the Wolfpack and followed it up last night in Glen Ellyn with a 99-72 triumph over the Chaparrals who were ranked in the top-20 among Division III junior colleges. The Chiefs had previously received votes for the top-30 nationally in the NJCAA's Pre-Season poll.
Two other Region 4 members are also in the rankings. South Suburban College (2-0) from South Holland, Illinois, last year's National Champion, is the top ranked team in the country. The Chiefs and Bulldogs are set to square off just before Christmas on December 20. Tip-off for the game is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on the Bulldogs' court. In addition, Milwaukee Area (WI) Technical College (2-0) is ranked fourth nationally. The Stormers and Chiefs are set to battle each other in the Chiefs' Erickson Hall Gymnasium later this month on November 29, beginning at 7:00 p.m.
Robinson's crew is led by returning All-Region performer Joey Niesman who is averaging 18.5 points and 4.5 steals after the Chiefs' first two contests. Sophomore guard Jaylyn Kelley is right behind him averaging 17.5 points and 4.5 assists. Newcomer J. Caleb Slawinski is averaging a double-double by booking 21.5 points and 10 boards a game thus far. Waubonsee's center, 6'10" Brice Langford, nearly averages a double-double as well with 11 points and 9.5 rebounds through two games, to go along with averaging 5.5 assists. Yorkville Christian High School alumnus Colton Schutt rounds out the Chiefs' starting lineup by also averaging double figures at 11.5 points-per-game.
