Chiefs coast to win over Eagles

(Sugar Grove, IL) – Waubonsee Community College's men's basketball team jumped out to a big lead early on and coasted to a 93-75 victory over Benedictine University's Junior Varsity Thursday evening in Erickson Hall Gymnasium. The Chiefs (2-0) made a dozen three-point baskets and shot 53 percent from the floor overall in knocking off the Eagles (0-1). Ten different Waubonsee players dented the scoring column.

A steal and breakaway, two-handed slam by Reece Boyd started the scoring. A moment later Dylan Fuzak drained a three-pointer from the left corner for a quick 5-0 lead. The Chiefs never looked back after that as they raced out to an 11-0 lead after three minutes of play. The Eagles got on the board half a minute later and had only four points after seven minutes of play as Waubonsee built a 20-4 lead. Fuzak then drilled back-to-back, high-arching threes from the top of the key to put the Chiefs in front 26-6 midway through the half.

Benedictine slowly got on track offensively cutting the deficit to 34-22 with six minutes left until halftime. Chiefs' head coach Lance Robinson called timeout to get his crew refocused. Waubonsee responded with an 8-0 run highlighted by a spinning move and lay-in by David Robinson. A teardrop running one-hander in the lane by Donovan Brown and a similar basket by Fernando Perez seconds later helped the Chiefs maintain a comfortable lead as the half wound down. Waubonsee headed to the locker room with a 50-33 lead courtesy of a 21-2 advantage in fast break points along with shooting 58 percent (7 of 12) from three-point range.

A steal and lay-up by Duane Doss and a putback basket by Fuzak got the Chiefs going at the outset of the second half. Fuzak then nailed his fifth triple of the contest to put the Chiefs ahead 63-43 five minutes into the period. A triple by Robinson from the right corner pushed Waubonsee's lead to 69-48 three minutes later. Perez then scored on a drive to the basket to extend the lead to 75-49 at the midway point of the second half. The Chiefs maintained at least a 20-point advantage the rest of the way until the final seconds of the game. A long trey by Zachariah Hayslett gave the Chiefs a 90-66 lead with three and a half minutes remaining as coach Robinson emptied his bench. Dimetrius Butler then buried a triple from the left corner with two minutes left before the Eagles tallied the final nine points of the game.

Fuzak led Waubonsee with 20 points making six three-pointers along the way. Brown finished with 19 points and five assists. Perez added 13 points, three assists and two steals. Doss tallied 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while Boyd contributed 11 points. Robinson chipped in with 10 points and three assists, and Aboubacar Sidibe snagged six boards in the victory. The Chiefs are in action again this Saturday, November 11 when they host the College of DuPage with a 3:00 p.m. tipoff. The women's contest between the Chiefs and Chaparrals is set to begin at 1:00 p.m. in Erickson Hall Gymnasium.
