(Sugar Grove, IL.) – At the outset Waubonsee Community College's men's basketball team appeared to pick up right where they left off in their previous game. The Chiefs hit 15 three-point baskets in a 22-point win on Saturday over previously unbeaten Ancilla (IN) College. On Monday evening in Erickson Hall Gymnasium the Chiefs came out firing from long range again, building an early lead on the way to downing Milwaukee Area (WI) Technical College 93-80. Waubonsee (6-1) connected on 10 more shots from beyond the arc in the process of extending its' winning streak to six games. The Stormers (1-8), hampered by injuries and other circumstances, fell to an uncharacteristic 1-8 on the season after being ranked in the top 10 of NJCAA Division II teams in the pre-season.
Milwaukee won the opening tip and then proceeded to grab a pair of offensive rebounds to keep possession of the ball. The Stormers' Oluwamayowa Akinsipe took advantage and barreled down the lane, throwing down a two-handed jam thirty seconds into the game. It would be the visitors only lead of the night. Chiefs' head coach Lance Robinson immediately called a timeout and Zachariah Hayslett responded after the halt in play with back-to-back three-pointers to help Waubonsee grab an early 8-2 lead. Moments later Tim Taiwo buried a trey from the left wing to put the Chiefs ahead 15-6. Two more triples extended the lead to 21-6 as Waubonsee made five from beyond the arc in the opening five minutes. The Stormers then clawed their way to within 23-13 at the midway point of the half.
The teams traded baskets over the next few minutes highlighted by a drive and off balance lay-in by Waubonsee's Dimetrius Butler in traffic. Taiwo made a pair of free throws to stake the Chiefs to a 31-18 lead with seven minutes to go until halftime. A short time later Hayslett splashed another trey from long range to extend Waubonsee's lead to 16 points. The Stormers chipped away at that deficit getting it down to 41-31 with three minutes to go. Waubonsee then went on a quick 6-0 run sparked by a pair of transition buckets by point guard Aboubacar Sidibe. The Chiefs headed to the locker room holding a 50-37 lead on the strength of seven three-point baskets, a 15-2 advantage in fast break points and by turning the ball over only four times.
Waubonsee then upped the pace of play to start the second half and quickly reeled off a 7-2 run in the opening minute to take an 18-point lead. A minute later Pat Robinson scored off a feed from Hayslett and was fouled on the play. The sophomore from Oswego East High School completed the three-point play to prevent Milwaukee from gaining any ground. Not long after that Hayslett drilled another three-pointer to give Waubonsee its' biggest lead at 67-47. The Stormers responded with a 9-2 run before Sidibe scored on a break away for Waubonsee. The Chiefs continued to keep Milwaukee at arm's length by holding a 71-59 lead midway through the second half.
However, a long triple by Julian Valentine and a breakaway lay-up suddenly got the deficit down to seven points, the closest the Stormers had been since the opening minutes of the game. A frantic one-minute stretch featured Robinson barely beating the shot clock for a basket and Hayslett registering a huge block on an Antonio Foxwell dunk attempt. When the dust settled Waubonsee's lead, which had shrunk to six points, was back up to double digits at 78-68 with seven minutes remaining. Sidibe then came flying in to snag an offensive rebound and Chris Rhoades buried a turnaround, 10-foot jumper to make the score 83-73 with exactly four minutes left. Waubonsee clung to an eight-point lead with two minutes to go when Taiwo was fouled when he drove down the lane and attempted a tomahawk dunk. The sophomore guard made both free throws as the Chiefs slowly iced the game by building their lead back up to 16 points. A nice baseline feed from Robinson to Hayslett streaking down the lane for an inside basket capped off the final minute of play.
For the game Waubonsee made 15 of 18 free throws to seal the deal and help hold off the Stormers. Sidibe finished with 16 points and eight assists to pace Waubonsee. Hayslett also netted 16 points to go along with six rebounds. Tylon Toliver chipped in with 15 points, Robinson booked 14 points, and Taiwo added nine points, seven assists and six rebounds. Rhoades tallied seven points and grabbed eight boards, while Malik Petty contributed eight points in the win. Waubonsee is in action again on Wednesday, December 4 when they host Benedictine University's Junior Varsity with a 7:00 p.m. tip off in Erickson Hall.
