Chiefs win ISCC opener by just one stroke

(Lemont, IL)  -  Waubonsee Community College golfers opened the 2020 season with a first place finish by the slimest of margins. The Chiefs, led by head coach Dave Heiss in his 28th year, edged the College of Lake County by just one stroke to take the top spot in the first Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC) match of the season. Waubonsee carded a 337 team total on a windy and soggy day at the Ruffled Feathers Golf Course in Lemont. The Lancers tallied a 338, while Elgin Community College posted a score of 344, followed by Moraine Valley Commuinity College with a 351, and Oakton Community College turned in a score of 410. Morton College, the host school for the event, did not have enough competitiors to qualify for the team scoring. Individually, Waubonsee's Ben Gorski took medalist honors for the day by firing a 3-over par 75 to finish two shots ahead of Elgin's Jordan Stone. The Chiefs' Austen Velazquez, who earned All-ISCC and All-Region status last fall as a freshman, carded an 84. Tony LoPresti ended his round with an 89, Branson Vahl shot a 92 and Kade Witt finished with a 94 to round out the Chiefs' participants. The second ISCC match, hosted by Elgin, is set for next Wednesday, September 16, at Randall Oaks Golf Course in West Dundee.
