Chiefs finish 10th at Region, Velazquez places 11th individually

(Byron, IL) - Waubonsee Community College's Men's Golf team finished 10th at the 2020 Region IV Division II Tournament. The Chiefs tallied a team score of 1076 for the three-day, 54-hole tournament at Prairie View Golf Course in Byron. Individually, Waubonsee's Austen Velazquez ended 11th on the leaderboard and will be the first alternate chosen if any of the top-10 golfers are unable to compete at the NJCAA Division II National Tournament, which is set for May 18-21, 2021 at the Swan Lake Resort in Plymouth, Indiana.

Velazquez, a sophomore from Marmion Academy in Aurora, turned in rounds of 79, 83 and 80 on the par 72 course. His three-day total of 242 left him one stroke off the pace to automatically qualify for Nationals for the second straight year. Waubonsee's Ben Gorski finished with a 262 total after 54-holes, Tony LoPresti carded a three round tally of 286, Branson Vahl ended the tournament with a score of 290, and Kade Witt turned in a score of 315.

Bryant and Stratton (WI) College won the Region IV team title with a score of 970, finishing three shots ahead of Illinois Valley Community College (IVCC). Individually, IVCC's Ian Roach won medalist honors as the Region IV Golfer of the Year, firing a 229 for the tournament. Black Hawk College's Peyton Perez was second overall just three shots back of Roach, while the College of Lake County's Trevor Brandon was third only four strokes behind with a 233.
