The 2021 fall season will be Dave Heiss’ 29th year in charge of Waubonsee’s golf program. Under his leadership the Chiefs’ have won the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC) title five times (2001, 2004, 2010, 2015 and 2016) and the Region IV Championship twice (2001 and 2015). During Heiss’ tenure 55 golfers have attained All-ISCC status, including ISCC Medalists Milo French (2004), Tim Schofield (2010) and Ben Melms (2015). Heiss’ 2015 crew won the ISCC title and captured the Region crown as he and then assistant coach Rodney Davis were named Region IV Co-Coaches of the Year. In 2016 the Chiefs narrowly finished second in the Region and went on to place 20th at the 2017 NJCAA Division II National Tournament in Arizona.

In addition his 2011 squad shattered the school record for a team score when they carded a 285 to win the Duane Chaney Invitational. Another highlight of that season was when Alex Bremner and Colton Craig each carded a hole-in-one on different holes during the same round. Coach Heiss also had a special ‘diamond anniversary’ 10th year as coach in 2001, leading the Chiefs to the ISCC title for the first time since 1989. Five of Heiss’ golfers made the All-ISCC team as the Chiefs went undefeated in conference play while Heiss was honored as the league’s Golf Coach of the Year. That sparkling season was capped off with the team winning the Region IV championship for the first time in school history. The Chiefs then finished 18th nationally at the NJCAA Nationals in Arizona led by Aaron Conlon who placed 26th individually, missing out on All-American status by just two strokes.

Heiss led Waubonsee’s men’s basketball program for 34 years, guiding the Chiefs to a dozen ISCC titles. His teams registered twenty or more wins in a season 17 times and reached the NJCAA Division II National Tournament six times. The Hall of Fame coach finished with 644 career victories and was one of just 10 active coaches with 600 or more wins his last season at the helm. In 2008 he became the ISCC’s all-time record holder for career wins and ended up with 292 conference wins, which is 101 more than the next coach on that list. Coach Heiss has been inducted into the NJCAA Region IV Hall of Fame (2006), the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association (IBCA) Hall of Fame (2009), the Aurora West High School Athletic Hall of Fame (2010), the ISCC Hall of Fame (2010) and the NJCAA Hall of Fame (2013).

Heiss graduated in 1980 from Aurora West High School. He attended Eastern Wyoming Junior College and Bemidji State University in Minnesota. He earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Bemidji State and his master’s degree from Chicago State University in 1992. Heiss is a full-time faculty member in the physical education department at Waubonsee and a life-long resident of Aurora. Coach Heiss has three grown children, D.J., Danielle and Demi.
