Chiefs outlast Pioneers in overtime

Red cards, several offsides calls and a total of 20 fouls. Waubonsee Community College fought through it all and eventually pulled out a 1-0 ovetime win against Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference foe Prairie State College. After 90 intense minutes of play the match remained scoreless between the Chiefs (3-0-1, 2-0-0) and Pioneers (2-3-0, 0-1-0). Rain and overcast skies made for a slick playing surface at times as Waubonsee controlled most of the action. However, the Chiefs were unable to break through even after the Pioneers were forced to play a man down the final 10 minutes of regulation after defender Juan Ruiz was assessed a red card when he took out the Chiefs' Manuel Magana on a breakaway.

Three minutes into overtime Waubonsee won the game as Magana got another chance and made the most of it. The Chiefs' Jose Gallegos was able to control a loose ball and push it up the left side where he dumped it off to teammate Jose Alfaro. The freshman midfielder from West Chicago was able to dodge two defenders, then make another cut to avoid a third Prairie State player to create some open space and a good angle. He then deftly lofted a pass across to a streaking Magana who banged it in with his left leg off one bounce from 12 yards out. "I knew I had to get to the penalty spot as quick as possible," said Magana afterwards. "As a striker I know how to be in the correct spot, in the correct moment most of the time. I ran fast because I knew he was going to give me the ball if I showed up as an option."

For the game the Chiefs registered seven shots on goal while never allowing the Pioneers a direct opportunity all afternoon. Daryl Tangunyi recorded the shutout in goal for Waubonsee. "We had a tough rival who never stopped fighting until the end," stated Alfaro. "The game was really physical. It was interesting to see how we would react to a difficult challenge. The team never lost its focus or patience, and eventually got the goal."
