Waubonsee's Men's Soccer receives post-season awards

Waubonsee Community College's Men's Soccer team was recently recognized for its' outstanding 2018 season by the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC) and the NJCAA Region IV Soccer Committees. The Chiefs had five players honored with post-season awards, all of which were freshmen this fall. The trio of midfielder Jose Alfaro Jr., forward Edgar Esquivel Lopez and defender Adrian Bravo Cobian were each selected to the All-ISCC First Team and the All-Region squad. Striker Michael Waclaw and defender Gustavo Anguiano were both named to the All-ISCC Second Team.

Alfaro, a graduate of West Chicago High School, led Waubonsee in scoring with 13 goals, 10 assists and 36 points placing him in the top-40 among all NJCAA Division I players in each category. The Chiefs' freshman midfielder also netted a pair of game-winning goals on the season.  

Aurora East High School alumnus Esquivel Lopez finished the season with 10 goals and nine assists to tally 29 points. The freshman forward also booked three game-winning goals this fall.    

A native of Carpentersville, Bravo Cobian helped anchor a Chiefs' defense that registered eight shutouts and allowed only 20 goals over 17 matches during the year. The freshman defender even managed to score a goal and record a pair of assists.

Waclaw, a striker from Oswego East High School, netted nine goals on the season of which four were game-winning scores. The freshman also was credited with 13 assists, which tied him for 13th nationally in that category.

Another key member of the Chiefs' defense, Anguiano helped Waubonsee compile a 186-73 advantage in shots on goal for the season. The freshman from Yorkville High School also scored two goals and had three assists this fall.  

Waubonsee captured its' third straight ISCC title by finishing in a three-way tie for first this fall with a 6-1 record. The Chiefs ended the season with a 13-3-1 overall record after suffering an upset loss in the first round of the Region IV Tournament. Under head coach Brett Suhayda's direction the last seven seasons the Chiefs have captured three Region titles and won 75 percent of their matches with 106 victories overall, an average of 15 wins per year. During the same time frame Waubonsee has grabbed five ISCC crowns and gone a combined 38-9-2 in ISCC play, a winning percentage of 78 percent.
