Arevalo leads Chiefs to blowout win over McHenry

(Sugar Grove, IL.) - Waubonsee Community College scored early and often in an 11-0 romp over McHenry County College. Freshman midfielder Alejandro Arevalo sparked the Chiefs' offensive onslaught by booking a pair of goals and registering four assists. Waubonsee utilized its speed and depth throughout the match, keeping McHenry's defense back on their heels. The Chiefs, who improved to 2-0-0 in Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference play and 3-1-0 overall with the victory, out shot the visiting Scots 27-0 for the match.

Coming off a tough 2-0 road loss over the weekend to the second ranked team in the nation Marshalltown (IA) Community College, the Chiefs quickly took control on their home turf. Four minutes into the match a Chiefs' shot was deflected by a McHenry defender and then tipped by keeper Sergio Alvarez, bouncing off the crossbar and out in front of the net. Waubonsee's Andy Emile took advantage of the opportunity and tapped the ball into the left corner to start the scoring. In the 16th minute Arevalo took a pass from Adrian Bravo Cobian and smoked a shot past Alvarez from 12 yards out to make it 2-0. Just two minutes later Arevalo lofted a perfect pass over the Scots' defense in front of the net where Emile went up and headed the ball over a leaping Alvarez for a 3-0 lead. Midway through the first half the Chiefs added to their lead when Dante Sosa took a lead pass from Arevalo, out ran two McHenry defenders, and tapped the ball past a diving Alvarez.

As the second half began head coach Brett Suahyda liberally utilized his bench as the Chiefs pulled away. Five minutes into the second period Porter Wesson notched his first goal of the season, squeezing a left-footed shot past Alvarez into the right corner of the net. Just five minutes later Jose Munoz made it 6-0 as Arevalo and Cameron Davis were credited with assists. In the 60th minute Sosa recorded his second goal of the day and third of the season, drilling a shot from the right side into the right corner with an assist from Ajay Vohra. Three minutes later Adrian Munoz registered his first score of the season, taking a pass from Vohra and kicking a shot into the upper left corner from 15 yards out for an 8-0 lead. In the 67th minute Arevalo cut through the middle of McHenry's exhausted and demoralized defense and blasted the ball past Alvarez for his second score of the day and fourth goal of the season. Five minutes later a hand ball infraction in the box gave the Chiefs a penalty kick, which Jesus De La Cruz converted into his first goal of the season to make it 10-0. The final tally came in the 86th minute when Dany Paz made a nice hesitation move and poked the ball past Alvarez for his first goal of the season. The Chiefs' Zachary McNew and Lorenzo Trejo combined in goal to secure the shutout. McNew played the first half and Trejo the second, both of them thwarted a couple potential McHenry shot attempts along the way.
