MVCC scores late to beat Chiefs

(Sugar Grove, IL) –Waubonsee Community College and Moraine Valley Community College locked up in an intense Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC) men's soccer match. Tied at 1-all midway through the second half, both teams had opportunities to score down the stretch. But it was the visiting Cyclones (1-0, 1-0) who broke through to score in the 87th minute and pull out a hard fought 2-1 win.

The first half was a defensive battle as neither team managed very many shots on goal, ending in a scoreless tie. Moraine Valley pushed the tempo early in the second half, but the Chiefs' defense was up to the challenge each time until the 58th minute. That's when the Cyclones' Colin Kroll broke free from the pack, out raced a Chiefs' defender to the ball and beat a diving Alejandro Barrios, tapping the ball into the far side of the goal.

Waubonsee answered in the 67th minute as Axel Sanchez popped a shot up and over the outstretched arms of the Cyclones' keeper Andruw Martinez and into the right side of the net to knot the score. From that point on the Chiefs seemed to play with a renewed energy and put the pressure on Moraine Valley's defense. Waubonsee's Lincoln Lillwitz almost put the Chiefs in front in the 73rd minute when his header bounded off the top of the cross bar. In the 86th minute Edgar Barrientos' header from 8 yards out in front of the goal off of a free kick was snagged by Martinez to keep the match deadlocked at one.

A Chiefs penalty with just less than three minutes to go gave the Cyclones a free kick from 25 yards out in front of the goal. Moraine Valley's Fernando Barragan then blasted a shot that went over the Chiefs' line of defenders and curled into the left corner of the net to suddenly give the Cyclones a 2-1 lead. Moraine Valley was then able to keep the Chiefs at bay the final two minutes to secure the ISCC victory.

Waubonsee (2-1, 0-1) does not play again until Thursday, September 9 when they travel to Des Plaines to take on Oakton Community College at 4:00 p.m. in another ISCC match.
