Chiefs overwhelm Chaparrals

(Sugar Grove, IL) –In a match that was rescheduled from early in the season, Waubonsee Community College's men's soccer team overwhelmed a short-handed College of DuPage squad 7-0 on Thursday afternoon. The Chiefs (5-6-1) were in control a majority of the match and pulled away from the Chaparrals (4-5) in the second half by scoring five times.

The Chiefs were aggressive on offense from the outset, putting pressure on DuPage's defense early on. Chaparrals keeper Cedric Foka Souop, a freshman from Metea Valley High School, made a pair of outstanding saves in the opening 15 minutes of play as the Chiefs peppered the visitors' goal. In the 16th minute Waubonsee's Axel Sanchez blasted a shot from 15 yards out into the upper left corner and out of Foka Souop's reach for the first goal of the match.

The ball remained mostly in the Chaparrals end of the field throughout the first half as the Chiefs continued to press the issue. Waubonsee broke through again in the 43rd minute when Connor Holdiman took a pass from Marco Junez and popped a 10-yard shot over Foka Souop as he tried to race out from the goal to intercept the ball. Holdiman's first goal of the season made it 2-0 and the Chiefs took that lead into the intermission.

Just three minutes after play resumed in the second half the Chiefs scored again as Juan Noyola tallied a goal off of an assist from Sanchez. Waubonsee nearly scored again in the 55th minute when a foul by DuPage in the box set up the Chiefs with a penalty kick. However, Foka Souop made a diving stop to his right to thwart Eric Vargas of a fourth Chiefs' goal. Ten minutes later though Waubonsee did get that fourth score when Lincoln Lillwitz tapped a shot past Foka Souop from close range after taking a perfect pass from Giovanni Duenas.

In the 69th minute Sanchez made it 5-0 when he ripped a shot past the Chaparrals keeper from just seven yards out for his second goal of the game and fourth of the season. The Chiefs poured it on from there as Holdiman took a fantastic pass from Bryan Bonilla on the right side of the box and drilled a shot into the far corner to make it 6-0 with 10 minutes left to play. A minute later Vargas closed out the scoring when he went up in a crowd off a corner kick and headed the ball past Foka Souop.

Waubonsee (5-6-1) is in action again this Saturday, October 2 when they travel up Interstate 88 to battle Kishwaukee College in Malta. Kickoff is set for 11:00 a.m. CST on the Kougars' pitch. For more information on Chiefs' Athletics, go online to www.GoChiefs.com
