Chiefs Coast to win over Kougars

(Malta, IL) –In men's soccer action on Saturday afternoon Waubonsee Community College scored early and often on the way to a resounding 8-1 victory over Kishwaukee College. The Chiefs (6-6-1) jumped on the Kougars (6-3) right from the start, displaying superior strength and speed to score twice in the first five minutes of the game. Waubonsee kept Kishwaukee back on its heels throughout the first half, building a more than comfortable 6-0 lead by the break and coasting to the road win.

Just four minutes into the game Waubonsee got on the board when the speedy Lincoln Lillwitz got ahead of a Kishwaukee defender, maneuvered around Kougars' keeper Matt Haeseker and tapped a left-footed shot into the net from only five yards out for his sixth goal of the season. A little less than a minute later Waubonsee scored again when Milan Erastus-Obilo utilized his size and strength to shield off a Kougars' defender to gain control of the ball off a beautiful pass from Lillwitz. Haeseker quickly charged out from the net and dove in vain as Erastus-Obilo poked a shot into the right corner for a quick 2-0 lead.

In the 16th minute, Giovanni Duenas was dragged down by a Kougars' defender in the box as tried to get off a shot. Juan Noyola converted the ensuing penalty kick by drilling a shot into the left corner as Haeseker guessed wrong, diving toward the opposite side of the goal. In the 23rd minute the Chiefs tacked on another goal when Alejandro Arevalo's perfectly placed cornerkick, was headed in to the net by Duenas from point blank range from among a crowd of players.

The Chiefs were awarded another penalty kick in the 39th minute when Haeseker charged out from the net and made no effort toward the ball, but instead took down Erastus-Obilo as he raced toward him with the ball. Axel Sanchez booted in the penalty kick for his fifth goal of the season to make it 5-0 Waubonsee. The Chiefs completed their dominating first half by adding a sixth goal in the final minute of the half. A gamble by Haeseker backfired as he left the net in an attempt to track down a ball rolling toward the end line 15 yards wide of the left post. However, Duenas out raced him to the ball, kept it in bounds and zigged and zagged his way past a Kishwaukee defender, knocking a left-footed shot into the far side of the net for his seventh goal of the Fall.

Meanwhile, the Chiefs kept Kishwaukee's Andrew Leon, seventh nationally among NJCAA Division II players with 11 goals coming into the match, in check throughout the half. Waubonsee pulled ahead 7-0 in the 52nd minute when Arevalo scored with an assist from Noyola. The Kougars avoided the shutout when Alex Chavez scored on a breakaway in the 61st minute, with his shot slipping through the hands of Chiefs' keeper Brandon Ducoing. Shortly thereafter Sinoe Rosillo took over in net for the Chiefs, the third keeper of the day to see action for coach Brett Suhayda's crew.

Kishwaukee came close to scoring in both the 78th and 79th minutes of play, but a free kick and header each sailed over the crossbar. Four minutes later Noyola completed the scoring with his fifth goal of the year off of an assist from Bryan Bonilla, popping a shot over the head of an indecisive Haeseker from 10 yards out.

The Chiefs are on the road again this coming Tuesday, October 5 when they travel to south suburban Cicero to square off against Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC) foe Morton College (9-2, 4-1) beginning at 4:00 p.m. (CST).  Waubonsee returns home to Sugar Grove a week later when they host the College of Lake County (3-11, 3-5) in another ISCC match on Tuesday, October 12, also starting at 4:00 p.m.
