Chiefs rally to down Judson JV's

(Sugar Grove, IL) –  Waubonsee Community College and Judson University's Junior Varsity (1-2) engaged in a high scoring affair on the Chiefs' pitch. After taking an early lead the Chiefs then rallied to pull out a 6-4 victory over the Eagles (1-2) on a beautiful fall Saturday afternoon to remain unbeaten on the season. Waubonsee (7-0) will take its' unblemished record north next Tuesday, September 20 when they travel to Elgin Community College to face the Spartans in an Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference match.

Against the Eagles, Waubonsee looked to take advantage of a brisk southern breeze at their backs in the first half. Just seven minutes into the contest Jose Huitron cashed in by blasting a 12-yard shot from the left wing into the far corner of the net for a quick 1-0 lead. A foul on the Eagles in the 17th minute gave Waubonsee a penalty kick. Gabriel Gutierrez then drilled the free shot with his left foot into the left corner as Judson keeper Caleb Taylor lunged right. A minute later Chiefs' keeper Daniel Gallardo made a tremendous diving stop to his left, and another to his right a minute after that, to keep the Eagles off the scoreboard. In the 23rd minute the Chiefs added a third score when a streaking Diego Contreras took a pass from Huitron on the far right side. The freshman from Oswego High School gained control of the pass and ripped a 10-yard shot into the upper left corner for a quick 3-0 lead.

Judson got on the board in the 26th minute converting a penalty kick after a foul in the box by the Chiefs. That seemed to invigorate the Eagles as three minutes later they pushed the ball up the field and through Waubonsee's defense, catching Gallardo back on his heels to score a second time. Judson had a pair of prime opportunities to knot the score over the next few minutes of play, eventually doing so in 33rd minute off a 20-yard free kick. The score remained tied at 3-all heading into the break.

After a combined six scores in the initial 45 minutes of action, the opening minutes of the second half were more of a defensive stalemate. The first legitimate chance for either team didn't come until the 55th minute of the match when Eduardo Cepeda's shot from 20 yards out sailed wide to the left. Judson finally broke through in the 60th minute off of a corner kick. In a crowd, the initial shot was redirected and tapped into the right corner of the net for the Eagles' fourth unanswered goal and a 4-3 Judson lead.

Waubonsee answered not long afterwards, evening the score in the 65th minute when Lincoln Lillwitz lofted a shot from 20 yards out into the wind. The ball kept drifting and sailed over Taylor's head to tie the score at four. The Chiefs then regained the lead in the 70th minute when Juan Noyola took a pass on the left side from Gutierrez and maneuvered past a Judson defender to get off a clean shot from five yards out. The sophomore rocketed a shot to the far side of the net to put the Chiefs ahead 5-4. For the most part Waubonsee then worked to hold off Judson over the final 20 minutes of play. However, in the 84th minute the Chiefs added an insurance goal when Lillwitz took a corner kick from Gutierrez and poked the ball in between a pair of Judson defenders at point blank range for his seventh goal of the season and a 6-4 Chiefs' advantage.
