Kougars upset Chiefs in overtime

(Sugar Grove, IL) – Waubonsee Community College's men's soccer team saw it's season-long 9-game winning streak and undefeated season come to an end as they fell 1-0 in overtime to visiting Kishwaukee College. The underdog Kougars (3-6) gave the Chiefs (9-1), ranked 20th in the latest NJCAA Division II poll, all they could handle and more on a sunny afternoon in the far west Chicago suburbs. Both defenses were outstanding throughout the intense match that featured a combined 20 shots, 10 corner kicks, half a dozen yellow cards and 11 saves.

The best chance for either team in the early going came in the 11th minute when the Chiefs got a free kick after a foul on Kishwaukee. Unfortunately, Juan Noyola's shot from 30 yards out sailed just over the cross bar. Meanwhile, Waubonsee's defense kept the Kougars off the board turning them away on three different occasions. In the 23rd minute Daniel Avila got a shot off under pressure from 25 yards away, which also sailed over the crossbar. The Chiefs nearly broke the scoreless tie in the 33rd minute off of a corner kick, but Eduardo Cepeda's header went wide of the right post. Two minutes later Cepeda got in front of the Kougars' defense and headed the ball on the run off of a big bounce. However, Kougars' keeper Manuel Trejo was able to make a leaping grab. Each team had potential scoring chances go by the wayside over the final 10 minutes of an intense first half that featured four yellow cards.

Avila had another great opportunity to score early in the second half, but he blasted a shot over the cross bar once more. Chiefs' keeper Dana Brisbon Jr. then made a pair of nice saves over the next couple minutes of play as the match remained scoreless into the 55th minute. Two minutes later a foul on the Kougars just outside the box gave Waubonsee a free kick from 19 yards away on the left side. Lincoln Lillwitz' drilled the free kick toward the far right corner of the net, but Trejo made perhaps the play of the day with an outstanding diving stop. In the 65th minute the Kougars could not take advantage of a corner kick as it was becoming apparent that the outcome was going to be determined by which team made a mistake first.

Three minutes later Lillwitz took the ball off of a long free kick and ripped a shot that went wide left. Moments later the Kougars had a golden opportunity with a pass across the front of the goalmouth. But no Kishwaukee player was able to get there in time to knock it in. In the 72nd minute the Chiefs got a corner kick, but it was knocked away by the Kougars defense. Brisbon made another save in the 76th minute as the match went back and forth. Brisbon snagged another Kishwaukee shot off of a free kick in the 80th minute. A moment later Kishwaukee misfired on an open shot and Trejo turned back a pair of Waubonsee shots as the match entered the 85th minute. A minute later a shot was deflected by Trejo up and over the crossbar giving Waubonsee another corner kick. As they had done all afternoon though, the Kishwaukee defense was up to the challenge and knocked the ball away. In the final 30 seconds of regulation the Kougars got a corner kick as well. However, a header off the corner kick went over the crossbar and the match went into sudden death overtime.

In the 92nd minute a shot by Avila was deflected out of bounds giving the Chiefs another corner kick, but they were unable to cash in. A minute later the Chiefs got another corner kick, but the Kougars' defense cleared the ball away once more. A foul on the Chiefs in the 94th minute then gave Kishwaukee a free kick from 20 yards out and a chance for the victory. The Kougars' Ilir Redzepi then drilled a shot over the Chiefs' defensive wall and into the upper right corner of the net to stun the Chiefs and end the match.

The Kougars' upset victory spoiled an outstanding effort by the Chiefs' defensive unit of Dawid Szeliga, Benedicte Ndjibu, Nicolas Magallon, Ray Munoz and Eric Vargas. Overall Brisbon was credited with six saves. Waubonsee (9-1, 4-0) is in action again on Tuesday, October 4 when they host 10th ranked Prairie State College (10-1, 4-1) in an Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference showdown beginning at 4:00 p.m.
