Chiefs stun Triton, win in OT

(Sugar Grove, IL) –In a late regular season match-up between two of the top men's soccer teams in the NJCAA's Region 4, Waubonsee Community College stunned Triton College with a last minute goal to tie it and then won the intense battle 2-1 in overtime. The 14th ranked Trojans (16-2) kept the Chiefs (13-3-1) at bay throughout most of their afternoon match. Triton out shot Waubonsee 33-12 for the match, including a 17-7 advantage in shots on goal. However, in the end it was the Chiefs, who received votes in the latest NJCAA Division II poll for the top-25, who walked away victorious. Jose Huitron scored with 0:45 remaining to tie the match and Connor Holdiman won it for Waubonsee with a goal six minutes into overtime.

Triton pushed the tempo early on and kept Waubonsee back on its heels, nearly scoring in the 15th minute when they had a shot hit the right post. Triton continued to control much of the action throughout the first half as they put pressure on the Chiefs' defense and keeper Dana Brisbon Jr. Despite that the Chiefs almost got on the scoreboard in the 30th minute when Triton keeper Krystian Sroka came out 15 yards from the goal to attempt to grab a loose ball. Sroka got tangled up with a Chiefs' player as the ball bounced back toward midfield. However, a 25-yard shot into the wind curled left of the open goal as the game remained scoreless. The Trojans broke the scoreless tie when a handball foul on the Chiefs in the 41st minute gave the Trojans a penalty kick. Ronaldo Rojas then quickly converted the penalty kick for a 1-0 lead.

The score remained 1-0 in favor of the visitors heading into the second half. Triton nearly added to their lead in the 60th minute when a shot from the right side hit the left post and bounded away. In the 68th minute Waubonsee got the ball deep in the Trojans' territory, but Lincoln Lillwitz' shot from the left side was deftly blocked out of bounds by a Triton defender. The Chiefs were then unable to take advantage of their first and only corner kick of the contest. While Triton kept Waubonsee mostly at arm's length, Brisbon prevented the Trojans from adding to their lead with several outstanding stops on his way to compiling 16 saves.

Just when it appeared the Trojans would hold on for a 1-nil victory, the Chiefs tied the game with only 45 seconds to go. Huitron took a pass from Gabriel Gutierrez and drilled a shot out of the reach of a diving Sroka into the right corner of the net. Moments later a rejuvenated Waubonsee crew then nearly won the game in the final seconds of regulation. Lillwitz got free on a breakaway in the waning seconds and Sroka raced out from the goal to intercept him. The Trojans' 6'4" keeper then leaped into the air as Lillwitz ripped off a shot from 15 yards out with only 0:05 on the clock. Just as the ball was about to go through his legs while in midair, Sroka was able to reach down and get a hand on the shot to send the match into overtime. Six minutes into the extra session Holdiman received a great pass from Eduardo Cepeda and got past the Trojans defensive backline. The sophomore forward was able to poke a shot past a scrambling Sroka from 12 yards out for his first goal of the season setting off a jubilant Chiefs' celebration.

The Chiefs close out the regular season this coming Tuesday, October 25, when they square off against the North Central College Junior Varsity at 8:00 p.m. under the lights in Naperville.
