Avila's 'Hat Trick' helps Chiefs take over first in ISCC

(Sugar Grove, IL.)  Behind Daniel Avila's three goals the Waubonsee Community College Men's Soccer team topped visiting Elgin Community College 3-1 and took over sole possession of first place in the current Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC) standings. Avila's 'hat trick' helped coach Brett Suhayda's crew improve to 4-3 overall and 3-0 in ISCC play with four league games remaining. Morton College, Prairie State College, Oakton Community College and Moraine Valley Community College are all tied for second with 2-1 records. The Chiefs are scheduled to play Prairie State in Chicago Heights on September 23 and Morton in Cicero on October 3.

The Chiefs got on the scoreboard first against the Spartans (2-4, 1-2) as Avila notched his first goal midway through the first half. Javier Aguirre lofted a pass from midfield over the Spartans' defense that set up a footrace to the ball. Avila split two Elgin defenders and outran them to the ball. The sophomore from Oswego then quickly poked a left-footed shot on the run to the right of keeper Iker Villagomez as he raced toward him, with the ball bounding into the right corner of the net for a 1-0 Waubonsee lead.

The score remained that way through halftime until Elgin's Matthew Kapetan tied the match with a goal in the 77th minute. Waubonsee, which held a 14-4 edge in shots on goal throughout the match, took the lead just six minutes later. Avila received a perfect pass from the left side just five yards out in front of the net. The Chiefs forward leaped and headed the ball into the right side of the goal to the delight of the Waubonsee faithful.

In the 89th minute Avila tacked on an insurance goal to complete his 'hat trick' and secure the Chiefs' victory. Fernando Robles drilled a long pass down field that deflected off a Spartans' defender at the top of the box. Avila raced over and gathered the ball as Villagomez came out from the net. Avila veered to his left and drilled a shot into the net from 15 yards away before Villagomez was able to retreat to the goal for his fifth score of the season.

Avila nearly booked a fourth goal in the waning seconds when he spun and lofted a long shot from 40 yards out. The ball sailed over Villagomez's head and nestled into the back of the net as the buzzer sounded, but the officials waved off the goal. Chiefs' keeper Dana Brisbon Jr. was credited with three saves in net on the way to picking up the win. Waubonsee is in action again tomorrow, Thursday, September 14 when they host Judson University's Junior Varsity starting at 4:00 p.m.
