Chiefs fall in exhibition to NCC JV's

(Sugar Grove, IL.)  Waubonsee Community College Men's Soccer team hosted the North Central College Junior Varsity in an exhibition match on Thursday afternoon. On the strength of a penalty kick goal in the second half the visiting Cardinals pulled out a 2-0 victory. The Chiefs were able to rest some of their starters and give key reserves more playing experience leading up to Waubonsee's showdown with Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference co-leader Morton College. The Chiefs (6-6, 4-1) and Panthers (7-3-1, 4-1) are set to square off next Tuesday, October 3. Kickoff is slated for 4:00 p.m. in south suburban Cicero.

Five minutes into the match the Chiefs had a great opportunity to get on the board. However, Lola Ramadhan's left-footed strike from 15 yards out sailed just over the crossbar. Chiefs' keeper David Ramirez made a nice save in the eighth minute to keep the match scoreless. The Cardinals nearly broke through in the 18th minute off a corner kick, but a close in shot caromed off the crossbar and out of bounds. Waubonsee's Dawid Szeliga had a prime scoring opportunity in the 34th minute but was denied by a fantastic save by Cardinals' keeper Sid Marquardt. Five minutes later a header by the Chiefs' Javier Aguirre off a corner kick went wide left as both teams battled back and forth. Aguirre had another chance in 41st minute with a left-footed shot from the left wing about 17 yards out. Again, Marquardt foiled his attempt as he made a diving stop to his right for a save. The half ended in a scoreless tie despite each team having the ball deep into the other team's side of the field several times.

Ten minutes into the second half the match remained deadlocked thanks in part to a pair of nice defensive plays by Chiefs' back Benedicte Ndijibu. However, midway through the period a foul on the Chiefs gave North Central a penalty kick. Bradyn Langloss converted the ensuing kick to give the visitors a 1-0 lead with 25 minutes left in regulation. The Cardinals kept the pressure on the Chiefs' defense in an attempt to control the action down the stretch. Waubonsee had a chance to tie the game in the 78th minute when Alan Sanchez broke through the North Central defense. But the freshman's attacking shot on the run sailed off to the right of the goal. A minute later the Cardinals tacked on a big insurance goal as they peppered the Chiefs net. Waubonsee's Orlando Velazquez, who entered in goal for the Chiefs in the 75th minute, made a diving stop of a point-blank shot. However, before he could scramble back on his feet the Cardinals' Nathan Usrey drilled the deflection into the right corner of net.
