Chiefs close out ISCC slate with win over CLC

(Sugar Grove, IL.)  Waubonsee Community College Men's Soccer team closed out its' 2023 Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC) schedule with a 2-0 victory over the College of Lake County. The Chiefs (7-8, 5-2) prevailed on a windy afternoon with two late goals as coach Brett Suhayda's squad secured a third-place finish in the ISCC standings behind nationally ranked Prairie State College (12-2, 6-1) and Morton College (9-3-1, 6-1).

Neither team could muster much offensively in the opening 20 minutes of the match. As a matter of fact, the Lancers (2-8-2, 0-6) did not get their first shot on goal until the 23rd minute of the match. Waubonsee continued to pressure Lake County's defense as the first half progressed but could not get many clear shots off either. In the 32nd minute Benedicte Ndijibu lined a shot from 20 yards out that sailed well over the crossbar. Three minutes later Chiefs' keeper Dana Brisbon Jr. turned away a Lancers' shot off a corner kick. Waubonsee worked to speed up the tempo of play to no avail as the Lancers defense rose to the occasion each time.

The Chiefs' Ivan Vilchis went down with an injury in the 41st minute that halted play for 15 minutes and resulted in a Lancers' red card, forcing them to play a player down the rest of the way. When the game resumed Waubonsee patiently worked the ball around trying to get a solid scoring opportunity before the end of the half. The Chiefs did get one shot in the waning seconds, but it sailed wide right as the half ended in a scoreless tie.

Waubonsee's Eric Anderson ripped a shot from 12 yards out that went right of the goal in the 51st minute as the Chiefs' offense began to show some life. Waubonsee got off three more shots over the next two minutes. However, none of them found their mark. A header by Anderson from close range went left of the post in the 57th minute as Waubonsee pressed the attack. Lake County's best chance to score came in the 61st minute when Andy Tobar broke through the Chiefs' defense and got off a breakaway shot that bounded right of the goal.

A foul on the Lancers in the 65th minute gave the Chiefs a free kick from 25 yards out. Anderson then proceeded to drill a perfect shot into the upper left corner of the net beyond the reach of Lancers' keeper Edwin Hernandez. Barely a minute later Waubonsee's Daniel Avila sent a pass from the left wing in front of the goal where Salvador Martinez Jr. blasted a left-footed shot from seven yards out into the back of the net. Two minutes later Avila nearly scored a third Chiefs goal when his shot from the left side hit the right post and bounded away. Waubonsee continued to dominate much of the action down the stretch. Avila had a solid shot from 10 yards out turned back by Hernandez in the 80th minute. The Chiefs finished the match out shooting the Lancers 21-4, including a 5-1 advantage in shots on goal.

The Chiefs are set to take the pitch again this coming Saturday, October 14 when they host Rock Valley College (8-5-1) beginning at 2:30 p.m. The women's match between the Chiefs (8-5) and Golden Eagles (11-2-3) will take place at noon that day on Waubonsee's field.
