Five Chiefs Receive Post-Season Honors

Daniel Avila headlined a contingent of five Waubonsee Community College's Men's Soccer players that were recognized for their outstanding play by the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC) and the NJCAA's Region 4 Division II Committee this past fall. Avila was chosen the ISCC Player of the Year while teammate Eric Anderson was also selected to the All-ISCC First Team. In addition, Avila was named to the All-Region 4 Second Team and Anderson was picked Honorable Mention All-Region. Waubonsee defender David Garcia was named to the All-ISCC Second Team, with Chiefs' keeper Dana Brisbon Jr. and Matthew Lopez-Martinez each being chosen ISCC Honorable Mention.

A sophomore from Oswego, Avila booked 15 goals to tie for 19th nationally among all NJCAA Division II players. The forward also registered six assists on the season to lead the Chiefs with 36 points, tying him for 25th nationally in that category. Avila was chosen the Division II Player of the Week for the third week of September after he scored seven goals in a pair of Chiefs' wins. In addition, Avila recorded three game-winning goals during the season. Anderson tallied nine goals and three assists from his forward position. The sophomore from Geneva finished the season with 21 points and booted two game-winning goals as he and Avila provided a one-two scoring punch for the Chiefs.

Garcia anchored Waubonsee's defense for most of the season. The Montgomery resident even managed to score a goal himself. An Oswego High School alumnus, Garcia helped Waubonsee limit its' ISCC opponents to a total of eight goals in six of their seven conference matches. Known to his teammates as Xavier, Brisbon recorded 75 saves in goal for Waubonsee tying him for 30th among all Division II keepers. The sophomore from Oswego East High School finished with a 1.96 goals-against-average on the way to earning seven wins in goal. A freshman from Aurora West High School, Lopez-Martinez was a key member of the Chiefs defense that registered a pair of shutouts.

Waubonsee finished the season with a 7-9-2 record overall. After a thrilling first round win over Triton College on penalty kicks, the Chiefs lost to defending national champ Prairie State College in the second round of the Region 4 Tournament. Coach Brett Suhayda's Chiefs placed third in the ISCC with a 5-2 mark. Both of Waubonsee's conference losses came to nationally ranked Prairie State and Morton College.
