12th Ranked PSC tops Chiefs

(Sugar Grove, IL) – Waubonsee Community College's men's soccer team hosted highly touted Prairie State College in an Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC) match Tuesday evening. The Pioneers (8-3-2, 4-0-1), ranked 12th in the latest NJCAA Division II poll, downed the Chiefs 3-0 to remain on top of the ISCC standings. For the most part the underdog Chiefs (4-5-1, 1-3-1) kept up with Prairie State, the 2022 National Champions, throughout the fast-paced game but could just not find the back of the net.

Waubonsee almost got on the board in the third minute when Jayden Patino ripped a shot from the right wing that was deflected away by Prairie State's freshman keeper Goncalo Tomas. The Pioneers broke through in the eighth minute when Jim Boulanger out maneuvered Lola Ramadhan and blasted a left-footed shot past Chiefs' keeper Abrahm Tiburcio. A minute later Patino was denied again as Tomas, a native of Lisbon, Portugal, made a diving stop on another shot from the right side. The Pioneers, boasting a roster with a dozen international players, nearly tacked on a second goal a couple minutes later. However, the shot went wide left of the post. An action packed first half came to a close with Prairie State holding a slim 1-0 lead.

The Chiefs made a bid to knot the score in the 52nd minute, but Tomas leaped in a crowd to snag the ball before anyone could head the ball toward the goal. The Pioneers then added a big second goal as Mateo Nabona delivered a pass from the left side that Luis Munoz redirected past the Chiefs' Angel Moreno in the 60th minute. Patino almost got the Chiefs on the board two minutes later as he got off a shot as Tomas raced out to intercept him. However, Patino's shot sailed wide right keeping Waubonsee down two scores.

Over the next twenty minutes of play the Chiefs could not muster much offensively. Prairie State was then able to add a third goal in the 82nd minute through their French connections. Nabona, from Valence, France, got free on the right side and fed Boulanger streaking down the middle. The native of Dourdan, France took the pass and quickly poked a shot past Moreno and into the right corner of the net for a 3-0 lead. By the end of the match the Pioneers outshot the Chiefs 15-6, including a 6-3 edge in shots on goal. Tomas finished with three saves in recording the shutout for Prairie State. Tiburcio was credited with two saves and Moreno with one for Waubonsee. The Chiefs are in action again this coming Saturday, October 5 when they host Joliet Junior College beginning at 2:30 p.m. Waubonsee and Joliet's women's teams square off prior to that starting at noon.
